T3G Feedback and questions about Tacoma3G.com - How can our community and website be better?

Thumbs up to which situation?
I think its a great idea as long as its separated in a way that can be easily accessed by all
There is always a ton of ideas and great projects to see and read about out there that ofcourse can give everybody here ideas and inspiration

I noticed the beta part after I posted. I’m not sure I would use it at all because it seems like it could potentially ruin things with some type of catastrophic problem. A lot of your database would be dependent on the add-on not fucking up.

I do however love the idea of what it can do, so we’ll see.

I’ve also had some problems with that developer and some of his other add-ons before.

For those with this exact opinion, do you still feel this strongly even if it is possible to completely hide the content you don't care about? Just making sure you guys understand you could choose to remove the 4Runner or 2nd gen Taco etc. content from your view.

I am very torn on this whole thing. I'm not sure what a sister site would do to T3G, either. Would that spread our community too thin?
I'm a newer member/contributor but honestly, this site has a much better sense of community than TW. The members seem just as much as Tacoma enthusiasts as they are polite and courteous to each other. It seems every 4 posts on TW is someone flaming someone else. I prefer to come to T3G because of the narrowed focus of the 3G and it seems people are just a lot nicer. For sure if you expanded and had other vehicles included, there is added benefit but for a novice car mod guy, it just adds to my confusion of what to do!

Anyway, my 2 cents would be for you to create a sister site too.

Thank you for your input Tony. And I appreciate the kind words about T3G.

I think it is basically decided (in my own mind) that I will eventually create a sister site because of the feedback you guys have given me on my original idea. The sister site will include all Toyota 4x4 vehicles except for the 3rd gen Tacoma, because this site is home to that. I feel that's the best way to go about it and I see it working out well especially since it will have virtually no effect on T3G.

Sorry I am late to the convo. As I am a new to the truck mod scene i tend to be more active in asking for advice rather than giving but im learning along the way. anyways i read over the thread and just wanted to give my input that I am all for the sister site idea. this forum is by far my favorite platform of all that i have checked out so i think it would be cool if it was opened up to other toyota models as a separate site. I’d rather not have it combined and rebranded as a kind of new and improved TW because i thought this site was so cool and unique that its 3g specific and not overwhelming with information and all other points that have been previously made in the thread opposing expansion. (plus personally i think the branding of tacoma 3g is really cool and would hate to see it fade out for a big site.)

i think in a perfect world there could be a separate site for each model/generation of toyota under a big parent site (toyota rigs) or what ever was decided on. and then have a different admin like tyler for each site being someone with that specific truck/suv... so example; there’d be like a 3rd gen 4 runner page and a 1st gen tacoma page etc all under the parent site and they would all model the same management/culture/ platform that this site has. obviously that’s super ambitious and i don’t know the first thing about managing forums like this but since what i liked about this site is that it’s specific to my truck, the platform is great, and the communities great so i just thought that was a cool thought that i didn’t see mentioned in the post already

As you can see by my post count I'm new to the forum and new to Tacomas and 4x4's bought my 2019 Tacoma in early April. TW was the first site I found and joined but was immediately disappointed by how non intuitive and unfriendly it was and now Tacoma 3G has become my primary go to site. I found this site when somebody left a Tacoma 3G sticker under my windshield wiper at Overland Expo in Falgstaff, whoever it was a big Thank You!
The point is that I joined this site because it was 3G specific, intuitive and friendly.
If I have a vote, I vote for keeping it 3G specific with a sister site.
Thanks you for letting me voice my opinion.

Howdy, Just kind of curious on one thing if I may. Tacoma is the first part of the Name of this thread, but I don’t see it in any of the other names that you are kicking around. It was the reason I came to this site. I can understand wanting to expand, But would like to see Tacoma, in the name .
Just my opinion.

Tyler, I really like this site as is. We all came here because it's specific to us. Everything we look at in these forums gives someone an idea and/or inspiration that pertains to them. The community here is way more inclusive and there's just a kind of "casualness" to it..
Honestly, I really don't see a point of a sister site. I think once you do that, the "my truck is better than your truck" mentality will spill over and you're just another TW. I think TW fills that "sister site" role without the headache and extra work on your part.
It's just my opinion. But I think what you have here works fine without it. Best of luck with your decision!

Thank you for the feedback.

I think most of our members agree with those points and they appreciate T3G for that. I see how important it is for most members and I definitely won’t be working on a sister site. Instead I intend to continue to put that time and effort into this one as it deserves.

@Tyler I think with the RoTM underneath the current one posted have one that is a closed thread that list every RoTM and when they got it with a link to their build thread if they have one.

I actually am going to do that! Like a history of the previous winners, right? That's my plan. Thanks for the suggestion.

What do you think of the contest in general?

I think it’s great, good requirement so people have to make some post instead of just seeing it on insta entering and leaving, I think just encourage them to make add a link to their build with the picture as well is the only thing I can think of adding at the moment

Just added that as rule #7.

Despite what I said in my post above this one, I am bumping this thread to hopefully get additional feedback on the idea of having a second website open to all Toyota trucks with the same design and leadership that makes T3G so desirable.

Thank you for taking the time to think about this and provide further feedback.

I'm not against it but there are plenty of off road forums, every gen of every truck has their own, every model has their own and there's also one where every Toyota truck is included.

It seems a little redundant. Plus you gotta think about yourself. I don't know how much of your time this site takes up but can you spare the time to run 2? Granted you wont be the only admin but still.

If it wont be a problem for you, then do it. Those who are interested will join and those who aren't, wont leave T3G just because you made a second site focused a broader scope.

I like it. Just like any other professional endeavor, you have to keep moving, progressing, otherwise you run the risk of stagnation.
One concern, as others have mentioned, becomes that the more members and larger the thing gets, toxicity and elitism can run rampant. So long as you can keep a tight rein on your beast, it's got the potential to be a wonderful thing. My opinion, for what it's worth.

@Tyler What's the cause for reopening the discussion? I thought a consensus had been reached.

It takes a decent amount of time and attention to run this place properly and work on its growth and future. However, I am lucky in that I have the time to do it now. In 2020 and beyond I will be living on the road in my Tacoma, full-time. My goals besides seeing the world are to spend all that extra time on improving this forum and documenting my adventure in YouTube videos. I would be able to manage a second forum as well, or at least I think.

Which Toyota truck forum are you referring to? Is it the YotaTech one?

Thank you for the input. Toxicity and elitism are the two things I take most seriously in running a forum, group, or anything else. I do believe I would be able to manage it if that ever were to start happening.

Selfishness, maybe? I’ve always been extremely passionate about 4x4 trucks and for some reason... forums. Owning and building my dream trucks is the easy part. Running a successful forum or website is a lot harder, in my opinion anyway. But I can never fight my own urge to do what has already been done, but better. Yes, there are existing forums for every niche and hobby you can imagine, but most of them are now owned by companies that buy out privately owned forums so they can milk every last penny out of them for profit. They lack a personable administrator and are unlikely to ever change or improve. When these big forums get bought out they end up just running themselves until they ultimately rot away. (I know many that once had millions of posts but are now totally dead.)

As I mentioned above, 2020 and beyond I will be living on the road and I’ll have the time to manage this.

I know that my spin on a Toyota 4x4 forum will have a better presentation and a more personable core than what is already out there, but I can’t say I’ll be able to convince people to become a participating member of it, and that’s the risk. Even if the execution is solid, it could still flop, so I’m very hesitant on the idea.

My wife, last night, said to me, “Don’t half-ass two things. Just full-ass one thing [T3G].” Is she right? Maybe, but I don’t think I would half-ass one of them just because there are two.

The other reason this idea is back in my head again is because of what I have planned for 2020. I will be at a lot of events like Overland Expo and SEMA, etc. I am going to be fully embracing the overland lifestyle and its community, especially Toyota drivers, are always going to be right in my face. It would be nice to invite these people to OUR community, but unless they have a 3rd gen. Taco, I really can’t. With a sister website open to more trucks, I could.

Last note: I have not forgotten about all of the advice already in this thread that suggests why I should stick to T3G only! Trust me, even I think I shouldn’t be considering this again. But I just can’t help it!

I’m may not be the most “active” when it comes to writing in the forums, but I am active in reading just about everything that is posted in them. At first I was hesitant about the change since I really don’t like the vibe some of the other sites have. It has turned into a community of “elitist” and keyboard warriors, which is very unwelcoming.
That being said, I am all for the expansion because the leadership here is much different than other sites and I trust you all will not allow it to get out of hand. Like so many others coming here is a breath of fresh air and hopefully with the changes you all are looking to do, and the team behind it, the community will continue to grow (hopefully bringing some added income of financial gain for all those who put in an effort here as well). As an old dead Greek guy once said “Change is the only constant in life.” Bring on the change!

Ditto

I think this is genius. I think that not only can the 3rd gen guys offer help and ideas to the other models but I think that others can offer good insight to the 3rd gen community

I think the expansion is a good idea because it opens up the 4x4 community. It also benefits people locally and be able to access those that has had local trail experience to share and mentor those that are just starting out to venture trails. Good direction overall.

Thank you for the positive feedback.

Just to clarify, my original of idea for expanding has transitioned throughout this thread as a result of everyone’s feedback.

Now, if I did expand, it would be in the form of a sister website that looks exactly like this one, but open to all Toyota 4x4 models.

This is something I still want to do, but I remain hesitant to start. The two things I am afraid of are:

1) I don’t want to spread the community too thin. Which one of the forums are 3rd gen Tacoma owners expected to be on? Probably this one, so why would a T3G owner join the general Toyota forum?

2) I don’t want to spread myself too thin either. I do have a lot of time to put into this, but even on 12 hours a day, managing a second forum takes away time from this one, and I wouldn’t want this one (or either) to seem neglected as a result.

I like to check in with you guys occasionally and request some general feedback and suggestions. How is everyone liking their experience at T3G? What could I add or change to make the forum better for you?

Some things already on my list:
  • The entire header of the website is getting completely revamped. I have never liked the one we have. The small T3G logo, the big black background, the small trucks on the right -- it doesn't look good. I am going to design one that looks more like this forum:
    • 1587151550664.png
  • A dark theme is in the works. I know this light one can be hard on the eyes at night.
  • Better, easier to find resources are in the works. Like bumper comparisons, suspension comparisons, etc. We have some of these now but some are outdated and some are hard to find.
  • More prize options for the Rig of the Month contest. I like the Amazon gift cards because it allows you to get what you want. But I think it's fun when the prize is a surprise from a sponsor like this month.
  • I am moving the website to a completely different server provider. I don't know how many of you notice this, but the website goes down multiple times a week for up to 5 minutes. I have made many requests for my server provider to fix this, to no avail. It's unacceptable.

Those are some of the things I have on my mind, but not all. What do you guys think?

One more thing:

Most of our traffic numbers are pretty great. We get 12-17k unique visitors to the website per month. We get 8-18 new user registrations per day (this is really good). And we usually have around 200 of our members log in at least once a day.

But our posts per day are usually on the low side: 50-100 posts per day. It goes fairly higher when I post a lot that day because I end up engaging members to respond back to me. But I want to know, is something discouraging people from posting? Or do people just generally like to read everything and either feel they have nothing they need to add or use the "like" button as their response?

Thank you!

Generally, I like seeing what other people do to their Tacomas. It gives me ideas then I just go from there. I dont really post a lot myself because I dont feel like I can contribute as much as some people.....hell I've only got one post and that's about the SR5 Pro grille that I made. I love everything you're doing man. Keep it up!

All of that sounds really awesome! As a vendor I've noticed a few things and well it's not unique to this forum either. But sometimes I don't receive notifications of PMs, someone quoting me, or tagging me. Now for a regular member this can be a little annoying for a vendor it can be really bad look when dealing with customers. We are on so many forums and I personally spend a lot of my time on TW sometimes I rely to heavily on the notifications. I can do a better job being more active here to help some of that. Just thought I'd point out an observation.

Keep up the great work! We are enjoying being a part of this community!
