T3G Feedback and questions about Tacoma3G.com - How can our community and website be better?

T3G fam,

I always try to keep it real with you guys and talk about behind the scenes development and plans for the website when I can. I think a key part to being a good forum administrator is being personable with your members and bringing things down to a level that doesn't have them feeling left out. Because what good would any of my ideas be if you guys had no say on them, hated them, and left the website? So here we are.

This weekend at an OC-Overland meet in SoCal, I ended up in a conversation with @Mr. Nobody, @Malcolm, @Romp-A-Taco, and @Paige about a relatively spontaneous idea.

What if we opened the forum up to all Toyota 4x4 trucks instead of being exclusive to the 3rd gen Taco? ?

Hear. Me. Out.

I created T3G as a 3rd gen specific forum because those are the trucks I care about. I honestly have no need for 1st and 2nd gen content to be available to me. I thought a specific niche like this would make us unique and a reason we'd be able to succeed. And it pretty much is.

However, over the year that we've been doing this, many people ask me and other staff about other Toyota trucks. "What about 2nd gens and 4Runners? You guys don't want those?" Well, no, we don't... that's the point! Even vendors have been saying they wish they had an alternative to TW but T3G being specific to 3rd gens just isn't enough because they sell products for all Toyota trucks. I have never really considered these opinions until this weekend.

This weekend I started really thinking about this and brainstormed some options. People love T3G because of the way the community is. Respectful, no cliques or trolls, and the forum itself is pretty and modern. But not everyone has a 3rd gen, so while they would like to be part of community like that, they feel like they can't. How can we take the good things from what we've built and expand on it, opening it up to this rapidly growing hobby? Create a sister site for other Tacomas? Meh.

But I think I might have a solution.

There is a way that I can open up our forum to all Toyota 4x4 trucks and still have it feel like it is only for 3rd gen owners if that is what you prefer. It is actually possible for me to give members the option on what content they want to see, completely customizable by them. If they ONLY want to see the 3rd gen stuff, exactly the way it is now, they can do that. If they want 3rd gen stuff and 1st gen 4Runner stuff, they would be able to do that. If they want all Toyota 4x4 stuff, from Hilux to FJ to Land Cruiser to whatever else, they can have that. This would even function in searches. If you hide everything but 3rd gen stuff and do a search, only 3rd gen results will appear. It would truly allow you get rid of all the content you don't want.

The major noticeable change if we did this would be a rebrand on our name and a (hopeful) increase in new members to join our community.

As far as changing the name, it wouldn't feel right to have a forum for all Toyota trucks under our current name. We'd think of a new name that is more fitting to our new structure. I already have a list of names, some awful, some decent, and one that I am kind of favoring. But if you guys like this idea, I'd love to hear your suggestions for names. And for the T3G name and logo - it doesn't have to die. It can represent a branch within our main website and the URL itself would redirect to the 3rd gen Tacoma section.

Increase in members: Opening our community up to all Toyota 4x4 and overland enthusiasts has potential for us to grow substantially. And while I don't expect you to suddenly care about 4Runner and FJ rigs, it does still bring something to the table, which is new friends to share a common interest. Say we gain 1,000 new members from this, all who have a truck that isn't a 3rd gen Tacoma. That's still 1,000 new members that can be linked up for local meets and wheeling trips, 1,000 new members to discuss and share ideas about universal truck parts and camping gear like lighting, tires, tents, 1,000 new members to buy and sell those items with, and 1,000 new members to shoot the shit with in our off-topic sections.

I have already created a rough mock-up to help you guys understand my vision. This is meant to show the major changes in the forum structure. It is obviously missing the regional, vendor, and off-topic sections because those would remain the way they are currently. For the truck sections, they can be made as broken down and specific as we want them or as broad as we want them (meaning there are other options we could use compared to what is seen in this mock-up). I think I have a happy medium for the current amount of posts and site traffic we have. We don't want to spread our content too thin by creating a sub-forum for every single different type of topic, but as the site grows it can absolutely be broken down further for more organization.

The big point about this whole idea is that all of the specific truck sections will be customizable by the user. This means everyone will have the ability to hide whatever section they don't want to see with the click of a button and it will even be hidden in search results. This functionality is really cool and I think it can set us apart.

The marketplace can be handled in a few different ways, so I'm looking for suggestions. The way I have it mocked-up could work fine until we have more activity. For example, you'd go into the Tacoma marketplace and each thread can have a prefix in front of it with what generation the part is compatible with. Then there is a marketplace for parts that work on any truck, like lighting and tents. And one more for unrelated stuff like mountain bikes and tools. Again, we can do this however we want and it doesn't need to be like this.

This is a rough first draft and I am absolutely open to your feedback on this entire idea, but here is the mock-up with the potential name blurred out for now.

I already discussed this with all of the T3G staff and they agree that if done correctly, this could be great for the Toyota overland community. But I'd like to hear what you guys think. If you read through this, please comment with some type of feedback. Please remember this isn't definitely going to happen, it's just an idea that I recently had and I feel like I should present it to everyone.
I think it would be a great idea to expand ?

These are the possibilities:

One site, T3G becomes ToyotaRigs

Two sites, T3G remains unchanged and ToyotaRigs is a brand new site (that looks the same), but starts from scratch

Two sites, T3G remains unchanged and ToyotaRigs is a separate site but all the members and posts from T3G are imported into it so it is not starting from scratch

Option one. One stop shop. Why go back and forth between two sites to view multiple builds? Why have admins manage two sites?

Option one. One stop shop. Why go back and forth between two sites to view multiple builds? Why have admins manage two sites?
This is a serious point.

This is becoming an extremely difficult decision. The last thing I want to do though, is fix what isn't broken and destroy something you guys love (if that is how people are seeing it).

That leaves me with another option which is to do absolutely nothing and T3G stays.

Heres my input,

creating a separate site, or having two complete sites sort of defeats the purpose of us doing this transition over to accept other makes and models of offroad vehicles. This transition is to make our already amazing platform available to those who may not have a similar platform to gather, discuss, and share content with each other outside of social media. We came into this game knowing full well how our competition treats new and existing users and our mission is to change that, not by changing existing platforms, but by creating something new entirely.

I honestly believe you will not run across an engaged forum like this where you can post litterally any question you like and receive an honest answer without being flamed. We have dabbled with this idea for quite some time, and are honestly at that point where we think this would beneficial to the toyota offroading community as a whole.

Rebranding and opening our site to all models of toyota offroad vehicles whether 4x4, 2x4, or 2x2 gives us the opportunity to all of us to interact with each other the same as we have already. Tacoma3g would still be intact as a community, the site would just be restructured to allow for the vast diversity in users amongst other types of toyota vehicles.

It is truly awesome to see how much all of you care, I have never been a part of a community that really gives their users a voice in help deciding how we operate and make decisions to better serve you as a community.

I stumbled upon a forum today that I find inspiring. So much that I decided to contact the owner to let him know. I feel like this actually has some relevance to our debate in this thread so I'm going to share what I said with you guys. This might actually be playing Devil's advocate with my own original idea to rebrand, but that's okay.

Forum: https://wranglertjforum.com/
It is a privately owned Jeep TJ forum. They were produced 1997-2006 and he created the forum in 2015. He is a one man show - I don't think he even has any moderators. And despite the forum being for a specific model of Jeep, and the already existing competition he had when he started, the forum is very big now but still a tight community without drama. It even says so (literally) at the very bottom of the forum. I could see T3G being there one day if we didn't rebrand.

This is not to say I don't want to rebrand anymore. It is just some food for thought.

Here is what I said:
Hey Chris,

At first I wasn't going to say anything but I kept thinking about it and I just have to reach out.

I found your forum today via the ignore forums add-on discussion. When I saw your forum I did my usual stalking around that I do on every forum I look at. I enjoy getting a feel for the leadership of the forum, what systems they have in place, and what the organization is like. I often find forums that I find inspirational to me so I bookmark them so I can occasionally reference them and your forum is one of those.

However, yours and the way you run it I can seriously appreciate and relate to so I had to contact you.

The fact that you successfully created a forum for a specific Jeep model around 10 years after it stopped being produced, and have as many posts and members as you do, is very impressive and inspirational. But what I really love is your mentality behind it and how closely we think. I saw your very first thread introducing the new website and yourself and how you mentioned bigger forums already exist. And then you explained why you KNOW you can create one that is way better than those, because those forums are outdated and ran by someone who either has no passion or was bought out by one of those money hungry networks. You even mention this idea in the footer of the forum by using the pronoun 'I', which to me shows how personable and not commercial the forum is. And you mention a friendly community with no drama, right on the homepage, which you don't see often.

I can relate to all of this in many ways. I run a forum for a specific Toyota Tacoma model, the 2016+ 3rd generation. We have a major competitor, TacomaWorld.com, who have been around for forever. In this case, it is still privately owned, but the layout and design is extremely outdated, the place is loaded with drama, trolls, power hungry moderators, and the owner has no passion anymore. Everything about this place is trash except for the information and traffic that it has, and that's only if you can actually find the info you need through the mess of a forum structure that it has. I saw that you even created a thread to help members properly use sub-forums. People posting in the right sub-forum and with a decent thread title is extremely important to me and I also move threads around and fix grammar a lot. I thought I was the only one.

The fact that you have over 30,000 posts on your personal account alone motivates me to start creating non-stop threads, even if they may not be catching any interest, it's worth trying. I'm sure that's what you probably did.

We are currently going through a serious debate on whether or not we should rebrand into a Toyota 4x4 forum for all models. This idea came up due to popular demand. But I believe having the smaller niche is important for having a tight community and the fact that you are TJ and LJ only is proof that it works.

I hope this didn't seem odd to you. It's just so rare so see a solid forum that is relatively new and successful. I also own a Jeep (2013 JKU) and I hate the forums for that truck. There are a few to choose from and they all suck for the reasons that you and I chose to start our own forums.

If you want to see mine, you should be able to see the link in my signature.

Thanks for reading,

I'm thinking about two things.

One, we add a theme for the new green color the 2020 Pro trucks will have. Easy.
1559249453845.webp

Two, and this is a bigger project, we add dark mode versions of all the current color options. This would cost some time/money but I think it could be really cool and useful if done correctly. If there is demand for it, I can get started soon. If for some reason you guys have no interest, I'll maybe revisit the idea later on.

That is the TJ forum I previously referenced :)

Holy crap, what a coincidence! I know you made a reference to a unnamed TJ forum in this thread. But I found this forum today via an add-on I was looking at that has nothing to do with any of this.

Well, I see what you meant now!

I've been pretty active over there for some time, I'm actually just in the research stage of getting a Taco right now coming from an LJ. I'm sure Chris will respond quick, but feel free to DM me if you have any questions about the TJ forum from a members perspective. I'm happy to help where I can, I think it is a good example of a model specific forum that works very well.

I like the idea because I like the community for the most part. The only down side I see is it ending up like Tacoma World, full of trolls and misguidance for generally curious people.

I'm in a long conversation with Chris right now!

I strongly believe that wouldn't happen with me around. And then we have our other staff on top of that. And if my staff ever had an inferiority complex like they do over there, they wouldn't be staff anymore.

Keep it just T3G. Thats what TW is for. T3G is specific and thats why im into it. I have no use in TW anymore because im only looking for 3rd gen info.
For those with this exact opinion, do you still feel this strongly even if it is possible to completely hide the content you don't care about? Just making sure you guys understand you could choose to remove the 4Runner or 2nd gen Taco etc. content from your view.

I am very torn on this whole thing. I'm not sure what a sister site would do to T3G, either. Would that spread our community too thin?

I second this feedback.

I'm torn... I was just saying to @hellppy over on TW that I like this website better due to layout and the non-douchery that happens here. Coming from the gaming industry I see a lot of forums that try this, they attempt to expand, fail due to over saturation of the "market" so to speak, lack of preparation, or dick eating administration who run the show like shit.

With that being said, I'm just here to play in the sandbox with my truck and have a good time. While I like the idea of it staying Tacoma 3G, the idea of bringing in others who are knowledgeable about various levels of off roading, vehicle ownership and vehicle modifications may be good. The only catch to that is the enormous impact it would have on the management team, server / hardware and wallet of whoevers funding this show.

As for names, hopefully what is selected is something in which would be ideal to toss onto shirts, stickers, swag in hopes to be able to spot folks out on the road / trails in gear.

This would cost some time/money but I think it could be really cool and useful if done correctly. If there is demand for it, I can get started soon. If for some reason you guys have no interest, I'll maybe revisit the idea later on.
Based on what I mentioned in the other post about impact to the staff team and the wallet, I'd say hold off...because then if you do grow the site - you'll have to consider expanding for that market.

Keep it just T3G. Thats what TW is for. T3G is specific and thats why im into it. I have no use in TW anymore because im only looking for 3rd gen info.

I agree with this 100%. As the guy who runs https://wranglertjforum.com, I think a lot of it’s success has had to do with the fact that I’ve kept it focused on a specific generation. If I want to focus on another generation, I’ll build another forum for that :)

Due to the way this conversation has been turning, and my ongoing conversation with @Chris, someone with more experience than me, I am starting to lean toward leaving T3G unchanged. I didn't realize the appreciation you guys have for it being the way it is. And that's not something I want to undo.

As I'm nearing the end of my time in the military and about to start the next chapter in life, I'm still 110% focused on the Tacoma and Toyota stuff being what I want to do next, full time. With that being said, I still have a strong interest in catering to other Toyota owners with the same community vibe, leadership, and user friendliness that I do for the 3rd gen owners.

I'm not exactly sure what to do yet. I'm spinning with ideas and options but right now I'm considering a sister site that starts from scratch (or possibly imports all user accounts from here, but not the posts). In order to not spread our community too thin, I think the sister site might not have a 3rd gen Tacoma section at all and instead link directly to Tacoma3G.com to serve that purpose. But it would otherwise cover all the Toyota 4x4 trucks.

I have no idea if this would ever be possible but I think it would be ideal if we could have two separate forums that you use a single account to access. That way people don't have to join twice and don't feel like they need to make the same post twice. Because if you view their profile to see their posts, it shows their posts on both sites. And you would have a single post count, combined from the two sites. That would be neat.

Holy crap, is this what I need?!

I wouldn't use it until it's out of Beta. Seems like a cool idea though for sure.

I noticed the beta part after I posted. I’m not sure I would use it at all because it seems like it could potentially ruin things with some type of catastrophic problem. A lot of your database would be dependent on the add-on not fucking up.

I do however love the idea of what it can do, so we’ll see.
