T3G Feedback and questions about Tacoma3G.com - How can our community and website be better?

Just wanted to say I'm really digging the new theads/new posts being front and center.
Thanks, brotha.

I'm still working on that one. I like that it's there but I don't love the way it displays. Some areas of it have a little too much unnecessary whitespace.

Edit: This particular update has been scrapped entirely. I'm taking a different route, but if you want to see what this was about, click the button below.

It's been a while but I assure you I have been working crazy hours on T3G2G. I'm finally back with another update!

This preview is about the new design again. I have essentially scrapped what you saw in the previous preview. I'm going for a very modern web look (known as Web 2.0). I understand this type of website styling is not for everyone and I don't expect everyone to move away from our current styles (which will always be available as options).

Anyway...

T3G-2G Preview: #2 {Alpha v1.1.0}

Styling

  • Header design
    • I have never liked the header of T3G. I'm not a fan of the logo, its size, the way the navigation tabs sit in it, the Tacoma images on the right side, etc. That said, T3G-2G will absolutely have a redesigned header. I've already tried and scrapped many new header designs. But I think I might finally be in the right direction with this one. Please ignore the placeholder logo in the screenshot; it won't look anything like that. I made the navigation tabs much bigger, moved the user account info to the top right of the page, and have some cool ideas for the images that will fill in that entire header area.
  • Color scheme(s)
    • I've always loved the color options we have for our styles, especially now that we have the dark versions. The new design will still have all the same color options (dark versions included). But I made a noticeable change to their hue(?). They are a little more what I would call... coffee flavored. I'm really liking the toned down versions of these colors.
  • Typography
    • I knew I wanted to change the main text font to something that feels more modern but I wasn't sure what to use. I think I finally found it. This font is a pretty drastic change from our current styles and might be the change that takes the most getting used to. But I've been using the forum with this font for a bit now and it really grew on me. Definitely feels modern. One might even call it... hipster.
    • Additionally, almost all text is slightly bigger than its relative version on the current design.
  • Textures
    • I'm not sure if you will be able to see it in the screenshot, but there are some speckled-marble-ish looking backgrounds in a lot of the content areas. These textures kind of give it a 3-D look and I think they match the "coffee flavored" color tones well.
Again, this is an extremely early and rough preview. Ignore the logo and anything else that looks unfinished or broken.
(Click on the screenshot to make it bigger.)

Please let me know if the route I'm taking with the new design is completely awful to you. I'd like to dial it in sooner than later. No point in launching it if no one wants to use it.

Dislike on first:

Looks like I just opened up a Manila folder.

Too blocky

Zero character

Like on first:

Font

Dislike on second:

Background contrast. Little too dark.

Like on second:

Header. Looks really good how it drops down and shows the truck. Would be rad if it took the shape of a ridgeline.

Really, the header is a winner.

Noted.

Also, I felt that way about the shape of the header too. But it started to present a lot of unnecessary issues in other places.

I’ll see if I can bring the drop down idea back somehow.

If you want, I can try and help you. I did the my own website as well as my wife’s at denaliinteriors.com

I love the new header. I wouldn't make that "curvey" where the red line is. I like the "boxy" look. Makes it look beefy like a truck. Sorry, I can't offer any suggestions on the rest of it. I don't know the first thing about web design. All I can tell you is Kudos for all your efforts!

Very small update here. But there is so much more that has been nearly completed, so stand by!

This preview is about the logo redesign. I’ve always disliked our plain logo but I’m not good at graphic design so I could never really figure out a new one.

T3G-2G Preview: #3 {Alpha v1.1.1}

Styling

  • Logo
    • As I said, I’ve never liked our logo. It is very generic and has nothing to do with our hobby. There are some really nice logos out there in the Toyota / 4x4 scene
    • As I’m not a great graphic designer, I tried something simple but hopefully rememberable.
    • I used the TRD font as a reference and manually wrote “T3G” in the same style. It ties into our niche much more than the current logo does.
    • It will take me a while but I’m gonna try to make a full “Tacoma3G” version as well.
    • I feel like this has potential for multiple variations and colors.
    • I think it would look cool on stickers, patches, shirts, etc.
    • The TRD font is kind of weird to begin with. As a result, this logo feels kind of weird at first. But it has been growing on me.

Looking at the new logo again I almost think the 3 should have a rounded edge on the lower side, and not squared. It doesn't look bad squared, just off to me.

A lot of people have been telling me something needs to change with the 3. I have some ideas that I will try later on.

I like the idea of the new logo, building from TRD is pretty inspired. I think the execution might need to be cleaned up a little (maybe just mirror the top to the bottom?) but I really dislike the colors. Maybe mock it up in the same TRD red and see how that looks?

The colors will be different based on where the logo is seen. So on the website it would be colored to the website colors you chose.

The idea is good but the three looks off. I don't have any suggestions though. New stickers are always good. :)
I got tons of comments about the 3 being off. I'll figure out some other variation of how to do the 3.

Of the suggestions I've had, here are two of them.

Original version to be compared to:
1602129424471.webp

Shorter middle area on the 3:
1602129252518.webp

Shorter middle area on the 3 and also a rounded button instead of the right angle bottom the G has:
1602129312361.webp

Little tiny update here. I hope the small updates aren't annoying.

T3G-2G Preview: #4 {Alpha v1.1.3}

Rank structure

  • I've always liked the little "T3G Level" system we have. The text under your name that changes as your total "reactions" received gets higher (think: upvotes).
  • However, I was never really a fan of the rank structure verbiage I was using but I couldn't think of something better. For example, the rank I had looked like this: "T3G Level: Legendary"
  • I finally revised it in a way that I'm finally happy with; military ranks! specifically, United States Marine Corps ranks.
  • For now, they stop at E-9. But if any of us ever get that high, I can start adding the officer ranks too.
  • The new structure looks like this:
    • I • Recruit
      • 0 total upvotes on your account
    • II • Private
      • 1 total upvotes on your account
    • III • Private First Class
      • 50 total upvotes on your account
    • IV • Lance Corporal
      • 100 total upvotes on your account
    • V • Corporal
      • 250 total upvotes on your account
    • VI • Sergeant
      • 500 total upvotes on your account
    • VII • Staff Sergeant
      • 1,000 total upvotes on your account
    • VIII • Gunnery Sergeant
      • 2,500 total upvotes on your account
    • IX • Master Sergeant
      • 5,000 total upvotes on your account
    • X • Sergeant Major
      • 10,000 total upvotes on your account
-----

Again, I know this is a microscopic update. Hopefully it's fun for someone.

Damn son what a pay bump 👀😂
My platoon SSgt was company 1stSgt for like 8 months because they couldn't get a real 1st sarge to the unit. The dude was my age at the time, so 27-28, and could handle ANYTHING without asking for help. He was nuts.

Oh, and how did I forget... he just got meritorious gunny for that. Imagine being an E-7 at age 29.

If I was willing to stay in I might be close to that myself. Then again I’m army though so our promotions work a little different I think lol. But I’ll probably just get to SSG before I’m out
