• Welcome to Tacoma3G.com, a free resource for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma owners!

This website is the passion-project of a USMC veteran/mechanic, @Tyler. I created Tacoma3G.com to share my knowledge of this subject with others and to provide like-minded folks with a comfortable space to ask questions and create 'build threads' within our Tacoma Forums. Now, if the format of this website is confusing to navigate for you, or if you're interested in my full mission and T3G's history, check out the Help and About pages.

How much weight on your tacoma is too much weight for overlanding?

Do you seriously think a few feet above the ground will discourage a bear? They regularly rip open vehicles, RV's and fabric tents won't even slow one down. If your wife hordes candy make her sleep somewhere else.

    Transmission fluid mess

Over filled and puked from dipstick/filler (if you have one). Overheated and one of your seals leaked. Leaky seal on the verge of letting go entirely. You need to get it up on a rack and find the source. If you aren't comfortable with trannys take it to a tranny shop, not the dealer unless...

Brand new 2023 - cab misaligned to bed

Seems to be a lot more common, like everyone I've seen on Mexico trucks. Not surprising. Toyota's build quality has been suffering more and more over the last few years.

How much weight on your tacoma is too much weight for overlanding?

I just figured it out. I know why I'm so anti roof top tent. As a kid we had bunk beds. I had the top and more than once I rolled out. Must have caused an unnamed phobia.

How much weight on your tacoma is too much weight for overlanding?

What I can't figure out is why all these kids are so afraid of sleeping on the ground. Well maybe I do have an idea. Next time you're in the mens room listen to how many fathers tell their kids "don't touch that". I thing germaphobia has taken over two entire generations. The thought of...

what is gen 3 Tacoma exhaust made out of?

Try attaching a magnet to it. That will tell you whether it is ferrous metal or not. If it's not, it might be stainless. Which has a higher scrap value than ferrous metal And, do you really think a scrap yard is going to be the best one to give you an honest answer?

Desk to Glory, Tundra House on Wheels

Nothing new. In the 80's a couple built a truck and camper and and drove down to the tip of South America. I believe they called their series of article "The Turtly Expeditions". Compared to what they did remember, this was 50 years ago, wandering around Europe and North Africa today pale by...

    First Taco!

Comsidering the name no one should be surprised that the new Maverick has issues. I once had to decide between a 1972 Gran Torino and a 1972 Maverick. Gran Torino won hands down on looks and performance. Turned out on reliability and longevity as well.

    Engine Pinging

Ah, but if octane were the whole story. While octane can be related to pre-ignition issues, what's important about an energy source is the amount of energy per volume. In liquid fuels it's measred in BTU's (British Thermal Units). Ethanol is rated at about 76,000 btu's. E85 is rated at...

    Engine Pinging

Yea, when I was a kid I used to tank blend racing fuel from SoCal Racing Fuels with premium in the mistaken thought it would make my Chevy Nova turn better times at Brotherhood. Funny thing is when I got a degree in chemistry and started making gas for a living I found out I was only deluding...

    Engine Pinging

Ethanol laced fuels look really good at first. They are insidious and create problems later. Ethanol was another of the govenrnment (read politicians who have no scientific or mechanical knowledge) requirements. It's purpose wasn't the extension of fuel supplies and less expensive fuel (I've...

Before buying into the "Top Tier" BS, I made gasoline for over twenty years, do yourself a favor and buy some fuel system cleaner and run a bottle of that through. ALSD in 4wd on Sport

    Lithium Batteries

For a battery that will be charged and discharged (almost completely) frequently Lithium is the way to go. For just starting a good old lead acid battery will work fine for a lot less. Since most batteries last about 5 years you need to ask youself (assuming the litium battery will last 15...

    Battery Replacement Recommendations

Here's a secret. Pull your battery. Take it to the nearest parts store and tell them you need to replace it and ask what is on sale. The big named parts stores pretty much always have one battery or another on sale. Unless you have added a bunch of power hogging accessories the only real...

Do you need LT Tires or SL (Standard Load)?

It really doesn't matter what tire you run, you are going to loose some rubber when traveling in rock Part of what you pay to play. I really can't see taking my Tacoma (2 wheel drive) on anything less than a well graded dirt road. Anything more and the Jeep gets the nod. No vehicle can do it...
  20. jeepnik

Do you need LT Tires or SL (Standard Load)?

Probably the heavier the load, the lower the mileage at a lower pressure. But measuring it would be the trick. For what it's worth, Running the C range on my Jeep gave me better deflection at any give pressure. Also, I never noticed any real increase in tire damage from pokey stuff with a C...

Do you need LT Tires or SL (Standard Load)?

I don't weigh them every time. Note I weighed the front (actually did it twice before and after I added a Warn 8724). The rear was weighed only three times, dry, and twice with camping gear and such. Once you learn what you usual weights are (the front doesn't usually change unltess you...

Do you need LT Tires or SL (Standard Load)?

I noticed he pressurized front and rear tires the same. A very long time ago I found that you need to have a higher inflation pressure in the front tires of most pickup. And, it's important to adjust the pressure not only to the terrain, but the load. In other words, if you load up the rear...

Software update causing Brake Override light and “limp mode?”

Ok, if you say so. I just trust the guy doing my smogs. He has no skin in the game unless they could pull his ticket for passing modified vehicles. And they do perform stings on smog shops here.

    Pedal Commander

Proof? Well, I've spoken the the fellow that has been smogging my vehicles here in California for the last 15 years. He says it falls under the rules that don't allow modification of anything effecting the emissions system. And the throttle certainly does effect that system. Maybe some...

    ALSD in 4wd on Sport

First let's understand what four wheel drive is. We'll start with 2 wheel drive. Most have an open differential. That means that the wheel with the least traction has power and will spin if you loose traction. ALSD identifies the slip and brakes that wheel making the other wheel turn. If...

Don't know anything about engine fires. Oh wait, I used to put them out for a living. Element works if used during the incipient stage, it leaves no appreciable mess. You can extinguish slightly older fire with a dry powder but they leave a heck of a mess. A carbon dioxide works great on...

It still spins the tire, but a roller is pressed against the tire to simulate driving on the road. It also performs a much more complex set of calculations to insure a better ballance.
