    Really the only difference is the bottom hole pattern. We moved from a 2 hole bolt pattern to a 4 hole bolt pattern to give us a little extra to grab on to when we installed the shelf. If you don't want the shelf, you'll never notice a difference between the two designs.

    It wont fit the same sadly. The bed rails on the 3rd gens are 2" taller than the bed rails on the 2nd gens. The uprights for the 2nd gen and the prototype shown are 22" where the uprights for the 3rd gens are 20".
