Bed Stiffeners - What do they do? Do I need them?

This is a very common question we get at TOTAL CHAOS. If you're running a camper shell, bed rack w/ RTT, or just putting your truck through serious off-road abuse then you should consider Bed Stiffeners.

On 2005 and newer Tacoma's the composite bed is very weak. Unfortunately for the 2016+ it didn't get improved. Over time they can fracture or crack causing issues with tailgate alignment and possibly lights. We reinforce the rear bed channels at the tailgate which is ideal for preventing bed flex and avoiding issues that come along with it.

The TOTAL CHAOS Bed Stiffeners also feature additional tie-down points. Adding a set will give you 6 tie down points and 2 light or whip mounts. *no load ratings are implied

Constructed of 3/16" steel these are built to last. We finish them in a durable black powder coat and include grade 8 hardware for the install. Are you running TOTAL CHAOS Bed Stiffeners or have questions about them? Post up

Notes from user: 82abnmedic install

Installed Total Chaos bed stiffereners just now. Took less than an hour. I installed pass side first because it had less gap with tailgate closed. Pretty straight forward, good directions. Then the drivers side. I noticed 1/4" larger gap on this side. After tightening down the 2 lower bolts, I worked my way up from bottom on new drill holes and bolts. I could see the bed get sucked in as I did this. Huge difference in new gaps. Im confident about installing my new topper next week now. Not to mention, the extra strap points are sweet. Does not interfere with stock bedmat. Easy job, thanks TC.

@TOTAL CHAOS What is your opinion on installing these while the camper shell is installed? Would the stiffening of the besides have the potential to compromise the fiber glass shell?

Removal of the shell isn't necessary. Customers have noted tighter gaps at the tailgate after installation. With the shell installed you might not notice as much of a difference. We've always installed ours before the shell, so it's hard to say if you'll notice any difference.

I wouldn't be worried about compromising the shell.

My shell was on when I installed mine. I did not have any issues.
