Recall 3rd gen Tacoma fuel pump recall (Jan 2020)

Hmmmm mine was manufactured in april 19, however I stalled while drive and have had rough idling issues since I bought it. Exactly what they describe as the symptoms of the faulty fuel pump, happened to me at 300 miles.
FYI, the production period for Tacomas appears to be from Nov. '17 to Feb. '19. Looks like I lucked out as my '19 was manufactured in Mar. '19. From the attached NTSHA document, Sept. is the estimated timeline for a fix and rental vehicle may be available.

Just got my recall letter in the mail from Toyota on some specifics.

@DerbyGirl28 just out of curiosity, how fast were you driving when you ran into the issue? Toyota is saying at higher speeds but doesn't really specify.

It's not higher speeds. It can happen at higher speeds which makes it dangerous. I had it happen while parked, wouldn't let me start and when it eventually would it would stall either right away or at 1500 RPMs

Makes sense. I read it a little close, and you're right. I guess, I was basing most of it on the bolded title they had "Multiple Models and Model Years. Vehicle May Stall During Driving at Higher Speed "

So, what are you doing in the mean time with your truck? Are you in a rental?

It drives. Had it towed to the dealership, and like magic it worked for them. Recently had it in for state inspection and they told me, I'll be getting a letter soon since I had it in for low fuel pressure before. Feel like I'm on borrowed time waiting on this letter.

Of course its fine when you get it to the dealership... that's how it works! haha. That PDF Bulletin that is posted above says if you don't feel comfortable driving it, you can request Toyota to give you a loaner until they have a remedy. I'm going in for service on my truck within a week and ask my service tech about it. I wouldn't mind keeping the miles low on the truck.

Yup, thats what happened to me. Happened once, now it just runs super rough and i dont go anywhere that requires driving over 40, or where I can pull over safely.

I was going about 40, thank god noone was behind me. It was abrupt, and without warning...

Man... I was just giving this a little bit of thought last night and it sucks. I planned on doing some road trips this summer when the COVID stuff winds down (hopefully). But, with this potential of the truck messing up during a drive and no resolve until September, I think I'm going to have to delay the summer trips....

Hi Everyone, 23.5k mile Taco 2019 here with recall.

I went to the dealership after I had a rough engine running in the middle of bum dvck egypt, WY. After letting them know, they said there's nothing they can do, basically they said only until it breaks is when they'll fix it, because they don't have a solution, they just don't want to fork over the cash and time to fix it, I told them I wasn't leaving until it was fixed, and then I left :) lol. Their strategy is to not make a proactive decision, they think the issue will sort itself out over time.

I'm going on a new trip soon and have decided to take the peace of mind, I can't take the risk, so I'm going to replace the fuel pump myself. I recently found a compatible fuel pump for a reasonable price, and might convert it to a dual fuel pump redundant system. I'm going to make a video on how I did it for those self-diy'ers fellow taco'ers out there and link it here in the coming weeks. I found the $185 unit out there on ebay called the Spectra Premium SP9181M Fuel Pump Module Fits Toyota Tacoma v6 2016-2020 3rd Gen, looked good

Here's a link;

By the way, here's some Taco porn, yumm yumm ymm...

Hi Everyone, I installed that new fuel pump, works great. Should work great for the next trip.

Since I took the bed off I'm installing all new suspension, I'll send pictures and some install instructions soon in a couple days

Keep us updated on how it does over time. Glad to see someone find and utilize an option out there aside from waiting for the eventual factory fix.

Roger roger.

I figured with the Covid induced economic collapse and new world ordr there might not be a Toyota any more :), especially with the 2mill+/- recalls lol, someone is going to get into a accident (no pump, no brakes) and sue them. I got the recall back in November or January if my recollection is correct, since then I've been seeing my fellow Taco'ers and Taco'ettas on the intarwebs dropping like flies.

Since this replacement fuel pump is relatively a no-namer, they do seem to have good reviews in-regards to their other fuel pumps, so we'll see how it goes.

In the future, after another 20~30k miles, and dependent on how froggy I feel, I'll likely hack the original fuel pump module and add a Ac delco pump, with a cheapy secondary backup pump with a Y-fitting and check valve. I was going to mount a waterproof switch somewhere under the frame near the tank so I could select between main pump or backup (so I don't overwhelm the fuel pump power bus by running two pumps at the same time).

You know with all this fun I don't know why I bought a new truck! lol. Dealing with Toyota this past year is almost like that time my dad went to get ice cream and never came back... something about the "milk-man", he said...

i'm feeling really happy now, I'm super compulsive about my truck, so I took the new fuel pump module out of the truck again and disassembled the module. The fuel pump enclosed in the assembly i got from ebay has a Denso fuel pump in it with the same part #291200-1001 as the original Denso fuel pump from my truck! It already includes the same motor.

The batch numbers are different on the new Denso fuel pump, with larger digits, so I think this is really the real deal and I might not have to worry about the reliability because it's a newer Denso motor (I would hope)

That along with the higher batch number is a huge confirmation. Nice work. 👍

So do they actually have the fuel pumps to replace them finally?

So I just made an appointment for the last week of October with my 15k mi mark service (every 5k mi free maintenance service) will just go from there.

should I get the fuel pump recall done sooner?

Just dropped off my truck for the recall and knocking out 25k, which I think is just a tire rotation. My service advisor had ordered the parts for me when it became available and left me a similar message. One thing to note when going in, they don't want you to have more than a certain amount of gas in the tank. I was told 1/4 on the first message, then 1/2. So, confirm that before going in as well.

I called my local dealership yesterday. Earliest appointment they had for the recall was October 30th. Told me the truck needs 1/4 tank of gas or less when I drop it off. I’m also going to have them (hopefully) replace the bed cover at the same time since the weather stripping is lifting up.

I see your truck is a 2017 and my truck is a 2019 and I'm not affected either but other trucks within this year is affected. I'm wondering if it has to do with where the truck was actually assembled? Mine was assembled in Texas do you know where yours was assembled? I'm thinking that trucks that were assembled in Mexico are the ones affected🤷‍♂️

Mine was built in Mexico. I have no idea what the criteria of what makes one effected or not.
