• Welcome to Tacoma3G.com, a free resource for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma owners!

This website is the passion-project of a USMC veteran/mechanic, @Tyler. I created Tacoma3G.com to share my knowledge of this subject with others and to provide like-minded folks with a comfortable space to ask questions and create 'build threads' within our Tacoma Forums. Now, if the format of this website is confusing to navigate for you, or if you're interested in my full mission and T3G's history, check out the Help and About pages.

PSA: Check Your Trans Fluid Level

Shops also only see the failures. So TCCN might say what he says about not changing fluid because he's seen the failures correlated to it. But he doesn't see instances where there are no failures, and has no idea how many of those there might be. He could be seeing 1% or 99% and there's no way...

PSA: Check Your Trans Fluid Level

TBH I'm dubious about most of the things that guys says. He may be right, but maybe not. For me he doesn't exude credibility just because he has a lot of long videos with tons of views. Either way, my truck has 100k and benefited from the drain and fill. -M

Just drain from the transmission. I didn’t go deeper than that yet, though I’d consider a more regular regime of that. Once a year maybe.

PSA: Check Your Trans Fluid Level

TL;DR If you hate the Tacoma transmission, it might be under-filled. I have a 2017 TRDOR with the 6-speed Auto 100k Miles, 2" lift 285/70 R17 tires. It has always had the common transmission issues of downshifting early and holding the lower gear FOR EVER going up hills. Hunting for gears...

Do you need LT Tires or SL (Standard Load)?

You're right, of course, but there's no good way of weighing a truck or knowing what the load is other than guessing or going to cat scales all the time. And then, what's the correct pressure for the load and the tire? Do you do a contact patch with every configuration? Most of us are...

    Performance LT Suspension Capabilities

For reference, the old v8 4runners and lexus 470 460 have AWD because they're worried about drive train impact. My guess is if you have LT suspension and then you're boosting the engine for more power, you're also running 35's and hitting jumps. Because why else would you be doing all that...
  47. StormRnr

    Performance LT Suspension Capabilities

I've never seen a suspension specify the power specs. You can bet they're designed to handle the stock power. The rest of the drive train is certainly not capable of a whole lot more. You can fit the front diff in your pocket.

    Dual Battery Systems?

So the point of a second battery is to power loads when the engine is off. So you'd want a deep-cycle battery for that. Battery Recommendations

    1) You're talking about a different charging cycle than a car is designed to put out. Float voltage for an optima battery is 13.2 - 13.8 2) Chemistry is different than load capability. AGMs come in deep cycle for loads when not on charge, and starter which will die an early death if you run them...

    Battery Recommendations

I still contend that those experts are talking about deep cycle batteries that are seeing load when they're not under charge. And they would also probably tell you that float charging at absorption voltage is going to be damaging. My point is that all AGM, FLA, Li-ION LiFePO4 batteries are being...
  57. StormRnr

    Battery Recommendations

Well one of your questions is easy, I think that I am right. You don't need to change your voltage output for an AGM. And float charging at the absorption voltage is bad. -M

    Replace The Stock Battery

There are several posts with this conversation going on here already. Check those out. I say yes, and some say no. Charging is more complicated. Maintaining is not. The voltage of the alternator is within spec for maintaining an AGM. -M

    Battery Recommendations

I did find this article: AGM Battery Charging: Stages – workshoppist.com (https://workshoppist.com/agm-battery-charging-stages/) It states: " Never hold an AGM battery at the absorption voltage longer than about 15 hours, as this risks overcharging the unit. A smart charger steps down to float...
  60. StormRnr

    Battery Recommendations

If you look at any of the charging profiles that actual chargers use they taper off the voltage when the battery starts to reach full charge. Of course that's for deep cycle use.

    Battery Recommendations

I'm interested in seeing it. All I've found is anecdata on forums. -M
  62. StormRnr

    Battery Recommendations

Just a word of dissent: You don't need to change the voltage for the AGM. It's a starter battery, not a house battery. It should never need to get above float charge, which is in spec for the stock alternator output. 14.6 is the fast charge voltage and batteries don't like to be at that voltage...

    AGM batteries and charging volts

Alternators aren't chargers. They're maintainers. They aren't doing the work of reading charge level and changing the input to charge vs float.
