I've actually got a real 285 under there, and I did no hammering. It doesn't fit all the way flush, but its darn close. I worry zero seconds about exhaust heat.
It rubs a bit on the two 'brackets' that hang down, but it's up under there tight enough that it's a non-issue.

I'd do a rear ladder in a heartbeat, but my mid height rack means that I'd always be bending over to get into the truck bed, and since I use the tailgate to prep food, a rear ladder combined with a mid rack would be impractical.
