Help! White smoke at start up

Kidgrant

1️⃣ Getting Started...
Hey there, just bought a 2016 v6 with 97,000 on the clock. I jumped in to go to the parts store this morning and when I put it in gear it plumed white smoke for a second or two. I didn’t get a chance to smell the smoke, it has never overheated on me and from what I can tell it’s not consuming coolant. Please help, my wife will kill me if I bought a f*ckin lemon.

My best guess is you have a head gasket issue. It doesn't sound like it is very bad yet but if that is what the issue is they usually get worse. You might want to try a combustion leak test. Something like this

Best of luck and my fingers are crossed for you.
I certainly hope that’s not the case, I bought that tester and it’ll be here tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted! Are the head gaskets an issue on the 2016? I’ve never had a vehicle need head gaskets before about 175k

I do not think it is a common issue, but a few have had issues. It was a bigger issue on the second-generation Tacoma.

Hopefully I am wrong and combustion leak test shows you are good to go.
Hey there, so I just performed the combustion test multiple times, and got no color change in the dye fluid. So that’s a good thing 👍🏼 except now I’m wondering what else could be causing the smoke puffs, it happened right before I did the test and this time I was able to smell it, it doesn’t smell sweet like coolant burn off does, it’s smelled carbon like, so I’m not sure. Any ideas? I live in “high altitude” (CO) and the truck is from the east coast. I wonder if I need a tune or need to run a systems cleaner
