Tacos and Teardrops and Trailers...OH MY!!!

Team -- My family and I are in the market for extending our off-road adventures into camping (not overlanding...yet), but wanted to generate a forum where Taco owners can post their setup with Teardrop trailers or regular trailers (Note: I understand, Tacos are limited to what we can pull).

A couple considerations for our family:
- Affordability
- Practical
- We're not glampers!

I’m not sure we have anyone on T3G with a complete trailer yet. But, for the time being, I recommend YouTube searching Overland Expo West 2018. It just happened and there’s a ton of videos that show all the trailer options that were on display.

I'm slowly re-purposing an old military trailer. I know the jeep crew love their M416 and M100 trailers, but I had to get an M101A1. It will follow my Taco pretty much anywhere (same wheel base), and can carry at least 1 Ton off-road.

All I could get my wife to agree to. I just cant do the tent thing but if I did it would be a RTT for sure! Paid cash and sits in garage. Welding a thule 4 bike rack on bumper sunday. Plus with a family of 5 soon to be 6 we needed the two king beds and queen dinnette

I got a buddy who picked up a small trailer off Craigslist for cheap and built his own. Turned out pretty good I think.

That is really nice he needs to hack off the hitch lock though and weld on a legit off road one and then hes set!

We rented a RockBox Trailer recently when we went camping for 10 days. It was awesome. The extra storage space and the extra RTT made life so much easier. I would recommend renting a few different trailers before buying one. I have talked to a few people who built their own trailer and asked them if they would build another one? They said for the amount of time and money spent and all the headaches along the way, they recommend buying one built or atleast build from an existing platform.

building a trailer now but i don’t have the same needs as a lot of you all bring persian rugs, stationary bikes, 45 pieces of luggage, 4 coolers and 2 fridges, a chicken coop and a argentinian grill.

i need to haul 2 wheeled man machines. basing the build off a patriot thx. suspension is timbren axleless, forward of the bulkhead is a storage box / drawers.

We just ordered a medium duty Hiker Trailer. Something small we can park in the garage and keep loaded so we can just hook up and go. Couldn't afford the full off-road version, although that suspension would have been awesome. Looking forward to sleeping on a six inch memory foam while glamping.

Sorry for the thread jacking... Hiker has a long build time (up to 12 months). So it originally was scheduled for pickup on 31 Aug, but I was told they are running behind. When I finally get it, I'll post up some pics, and if we have a meet up local to SD I'll bring it out. I totally agree with the easy on the wallet, and why we went with them. We went very basic, but I figure I can make it a project like my truck and add to it as we go.

So my truck became too heavy so I went with a simple CVT trailer setup. I can wheel with it and it serves its purpose well.

My buddy just picked up a Smittybilt trailer and it's pretty nice. Not to oricey either. We're all heading to the Mammoth area in about a week so we'll get to see how it performs then.

Just FYI, the corona virus is shutting down production in China where most of the roof top tents are built. So if you see a new one that you like and is in stock, you should grab it immediately. If you own an RTT that you'd like to get rid of, these next few weeks/months would be a good time to sell it quickly and for top dollar.

Also we have a new trailer that we'd like to see behind some Tacoma's:

The XER weights around 1350 lbs dry. It has 10" electric drum brakes, so get that trailer brake controller added to your Tacoma. It's base price is $13,000 and well equipped around $18,000 (fridge/freezer, sink, water heater, stove and 15 gallon tank).

We also have a couple of Tacoma owners that do very well with our XOC:

It weighs 2600 lbs dry. And has all the same goodies as the XER but also a propane cabin heater. It starts at $19,999 and well equipped at $37,000. It has 12" electric drum brakes and matches the 6 x 5.5 lug pattern of the Tacoma. So the spare tire on the trailer will work with your Tacoma.
