Yep that's a thing.
If your insurance deductible isn't too high, go through them.
My suggestion for the future is to get an anti-theft bracket. $30 ensures this never happens again.

I got mine from someone on TW but theres a bunch of different types. Just search up Tacoma anti theft bracket in google and you'll see them.

That sucks. I have a Pop-N-Lock kit wired in to lock the tailgate with the factory door locks. You could look into that as well.
@nickyreno which one are you running? I like the lower profile one like yours vs the bulkier lock.
