• Welcome to Tacoma3G.com, a free resource for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma owners!

This website is the passion-project of a USMC veteran/mechanic, @Tyler. I created Tacoma3G.com to share my knowledge of this subject with others and to provide like-minded folks with a comfortable space to ask questions and create 'build threads' within our Tacoma Forums. Now, if the format of this website is confusing to navigate for you, or if you're interested in my full mission and T3G's history, check out the Help and About pages.

Help! Have you heard this before? Awful!!!

A little bit of background on this - 2018 OR SB MT about 22K on it. 31" k02s so pretty much stock size - a bit wider though. No lift, but it does have a leveling kit.

It started making a funny clanking noise last week seemingly randomly after I was on the freeway for about an hour. At first, I could with certainty pinpoint the noise to some component in the front passenger wheel well. I took it to my mechanics to get it up on a lift and we checked every single nut and bolt from the shock tower down - nothing loose, no apparent ball-joint issues.. everything seems pretty tight. Weirder still, I could hear it every time I drove it, but the shop couldn't get it to make the noise. I went for a ridealong... GONE! wtf. Ok so I go back to work and pick it up at the end of the day and noise is back the same as before.

Over the next couple of days it doesn't go away and actually transfers to the driver's side. I think to myself... It must be the sway bar, right? I take it off. Noise is still there. 4wd or 2wd doesn't seem to make a difference.

I went camping over the weekend with some mild off-road (just bumpy, not much articulation at all) and now it's worse than ever. Link is a sound byte with me holding my phone down near my feet while slowly turning the wheel back and forth at roughly 15mph in a parking lot. Sound really starts about 15 seconds in. If I can't figure this out I'm going to go crazy!! Ideas?

Ok I heard a lot of things between control arms, body mounts, blah blah blah... Here's what I did and the noise is gone.

I took the wheel off and power washed the lower and upper control arm bushings, then sprayed it down with a quality silicone (important that it's silicone) lubricant like wd-40 specialist silicone. I like saying silicone.

Has been gone for about two weeks at this point.

I need to try this thing is I haven’t taken it off road yet it’s been strictly highway and some street it squeaks when getting in the truck sometimes but more in bumpy roads or going up a driveway I hope this helps cause it’s driving me crazy thanks!

for sure! Mine was bad enough that just regular street was making it act up. I noticed it showed up/started only after driving through a particularly gritty puddle. I think it will do the trick. Really get those lower arm bushings good. Good luck!

This a dumb question but can you show me pics of where exactly you sprayed the dw40?

A leveling kit IS a lift. You have to lift the front to level it with the rear.
Several concerns...
1. were the bump stops lowered in the front so the struts don't bottom out?
2. were ALL bushings loosened and then re-torqued to spec with the truck on the ground at the new ride height?
3. is the spacer in the front machined from one chunk on aluminum or is it a cobbled together welded steel spacer?
4. is the spacer on top of the strut or in-between the spring and the top hat, usually made of poly urethane if between?

1. = possible that strut was damaged internally the first big bump you hit
2. = bushing will prematurely fail if this isn't done, all 8 bushings need to be "centered" at ride height
3. = have seen broken/cracked welded spacers
4. = missing or damaged pieces in the top hat allowing metal on metal contact

check these out, a lot of shops just "slap" these kits in w/o any care or knowledge

YMMV RON

Here are a few pics. Kind of hard to show with wheel still on.

Dayum probably pretty cheap, but a good catch! So many things to inspect when you start wheelin

Thanks a lot! Also on Friday night I went off-roading with some buddies and all the squeaking and clunking noises suddenly went away it’s completely quiet now idk what it was I was certain it was the rad mounts it was squeaking up until I started the trails I did about 30 miles of off-roading and by the end of the night it wa quiet and has been ever since idk what happened or what was causing the squeaking to begin with but I’m happy it’s gone

The squeak is back took it to the dealer and dealer won’t touch it unless I put the stock suspension and stock wheels back on 🤦🏻‍♂️

I always Start easy. Check the dust cover. I’ve had that multiple times on other vehicles. That’ll make a clanking noise. Especially if you wheel.
