Seems all cars come with these now. It is in the SRS module of the 2021 Tacoma.
Toyota website says this: An Event Data Recorder (EDR) is an onboard device that receives information from these computers and records that information received several seconds before and/or a fraction of a second after a crash or near-crash situation. The data is intended to help understand how a vehicle's various systems functioned in a crash. The EDR is contained in the Supplemental Restraint System airbag Electronic Control Unit.
Page 9 of the manual adds this tidbit: Your vehicle may transmit the data recorded in these computers to Toyota without notification to you.
This also includes front camera video according to the manual.
OK, we live in a connected and surveilled world. No getting around it these days.
Has anyone found a operator/owner benefit of this? You might be able to defend against a false claim of liability, but can you access the info? Or only Toyota?
Has anyone encountered a failure of this feature that interfered with your vehicle operation and use?
This is the first new vehicle I purchased in 19 years. So its all kind of a bit weird to me. It's not like I'm operating a commercial airline full of paying passengers. Just a damn pickup truck.
