Performance Engine cover experiment

I was watching a video on small ways to improve performance and in the video it recommended removing the engine cover as it is "purely cosmetic" and it makes your intake manifold hotter.

As an engineer I always want to see the proof and none was presented so I decided to try it and see if it is true. I took six temperature readings (each intake runner) on two days immediately after my commute in the Phoenix area. I got an average with the cover on of 166.9 degrees and with it off I had an average of 160.9 degrees. The ambient temperature was within one degree of each other during the test. It was one degree cooler on the day I had the cover on. I then performed a statistical test to see if the difference was statistically significant and it is. The probability of this happening by chance is essentially zero (P-Value)

Test
Null hypothesis H₀: μ_difference = 0
Alternative hypothesis H₁: μ_difference < 0
T-Value P-Value

So yes, removing the engine cover does result in a lower outside temperature of the intake manifold. However, this is the outside of the intake not the actual temperature of the air inside the intake. I highly suspect that inside the intake the difference is smaller. Even if you got the full six-degree change in the intake air temperature it would be estimated at a 1% HP improvement so less than three horsepower improvement. So, from a practically significant improvement perspective not so much.

I still found the results interesting and thought I would share.

I watched a similar video about the same subject. It makes since to me if you put a plastic insulated designer cover over the manifold , it`s going to get hotter. Back in the day, there were never covers over manifolds like they are now. After watching the video, I removed mine. Hell, it can`t hurt anything. Especially with me living in Florida, our heat index values hit 108 today.

I agree it can't hurt. Just as long as you have the correct expectations (the effect on performance is minimal to none). After the experiment I am going to leave my engine cover off. I know we do not have a beautiful engine, but I am not going to pop my hood just to admire my engine cover. I do not expect any real gains, but it doesn't hurt, costs me zero $s and in the Phoenix heat I will take any amount of improved temperatures under the hood that I can get.

I like having the cover. Since we don't have hood liners, I'll take any amount of extra insulation I can get to prevent my hood from fading/yellowing/cracking.

Doesn't the OEM cover have a little insulation under it? I haven't removed mine, so I can not confirm.

Not having to removing mine is def the Toyota effect.

Yes, there is an insulation layer under the manifold cover. There was a part in the video where the mechanic said the extra heat possibly shortens the life span of the spark plug coils and well as other electrical components due the heat extra heat.

That is a very valid point. I had not initially thought about protecting the hood.
I've heard 4runner liners can be modified to fit. If I ever go that route, then deleting the engine cover might be an option. But I've been wanting to paint the cover since I got the truck, just can't come up with any non-cheesy designs.
