Well, finally punched off the exam from a 20+ year to-do list. Passed and feeling good. Going to start with a handheld and work my way to a mobile mounted in the truck.

Does anyone have any experience with TYT handhelds?

I'm not spending an arm and leg for a starter rig, so no budget-bashing. I dont need bells and whistles, just a simple dual or tri band with a removable antenna.

Yaesu FT60R is a bulletproof hand held. About $100ish dollars on Ham Radio Online (Hamradio.com).
TYT TH-UV88 starter kit (with programming cable) was my second choice for $80ish. A friend had a Yeasu FT-60R and programmed it for me for free, winner.
I has worked great on the trails. Clear comms, easy to use.

Got a TYT UV 8000E, other than it gets hot with prolonged use I really like it.
