2023 Rough Idle

Hey guys I’m new here, I have a new 2023 sr5 v6 tacoma. I’ve noticed since buying my truck the idle(especially in gear) is really rough. The tachometer never moves up or down though. The cab has a constant shake like your sitting in a massage chair. 2 dealers ran diagnostics without coming up with anything. Next step is for a FTS to come take a look at it in couple weeks. I’ll say that the idle has never gotten worse or better in the 3200 miles I’ve driven the truck. The longer it stays running the rougher the idle gets. Temperature over 45 degrees also seems to make it rougher. Any thoughts? No check engine light either!

My thought is make Toyota make it right you shouldn’t lose money cause they don’t want to fix it. You can take it back to the dealer and leave it and refuse to pick it up until they fix it. I could speculate forever what it could be but the bottom line is a Toyota technician should be able to figure this out.
Absolutely agree. I already contacted a lemon law lawyer to get an idea what my rights are in this situation if Toyota refuses to fix it. I’m over it. Totally ridiculous a 40k truck runs like a old truck with 500k miles thats 30 years old

My other issue is even getting Toyota to recognize there is a problem with my truck. They all keep saying it’s normal. Get in another 3rd gen and completely different expierence

Wouldn’t a bad spark plug or coil throw and engine light? I’m thinking more along the lines of a motor mount. At 1500 rpm in gear I get a nasty vibration in the floor board. Vibrates to some extent at any rpm but 1500 is the worst. When coming to a stop in gear you can physically see the seat and steering wheel slightly shaking and feel strong vibrations coming through the cab with it slightly shaking. Tachometer doesn’t reflect the vibration. It stays steady at 550-600 rpm
If it is that noticeable and your dealer says nothing is wrong go to a different dealer.
No vehicle should do that if running correctly.
If this dealer refusal continues you have two productive options, hire an auto attorney or trade it in.

Just checking in to see if Toyota has resolved your idle issue?
No they haven’t. Another appointment scheduled. Corporate is very involved though. I mentioned I’m not the only one with this issue. They claim they haven’t heard of this issue in my region of Pennsylvania

So looked at my harmonic balancer/crank pulley tonight and noticed the rubber ring is cracking all over it. Granted can only see the front side but I can’t imagine this is normal on a truck with 5k miles. Have an appointment on Tuesday with Toyota and I’m gonna bring this to their attention as this is the 6th time going back to the dealerships for my complaint

Here is a similar thread on TW could be you if not it’s a similar issue.

I was thinking your problem was just rough idle the TW thread has a vibration at any RPM.

I hope you have found the issue it’s a shame you have had to track down the problem yourself. We pay beyond 40K for these trucks and other than looking good that’s about all we get for our money.

I have been looking at the Nissan Frontier for next purchase since they did a complete redesign it is a good looking truck. It also still has a V6 and that is the most encouraging thing about it.

Are you going to be trading in your tacoma. Yes it’s pathetic what I’ve had to go through. If the harmonic balancer doesn’t fix the issue then at least I know I’m on to something by finding a part that clearly should not be cracking with 5k miles. I’m just glad I found something for the dang dealer to focus on and inspect rather then just say it’s normal

No, for now I’m going to keep mine but if I starts having issues I will. For a while I had a rough idle when mine was in gear with the ac on but it seems to have improved. I mainly could feel it in the steering wheel when I would be at a stop light. It was very annoying and Toyota told me it wax normal I knew it wasn’t since it was smooth as glass until around 7,000 miles.

If I do trade I am going to entertain the possibility of buying a Nissan Frontier.

I don’t know buddy, the Nissan frontier is plagued with its own set of issues. I’d still bet money on Toyota even though I haven’t been to impressed, I do collision repair work and Toyota is still the best quality despite their issues and downfalls

Check out the issues I had with my truck when I purchased.

Here is a picture of the left rear door it was really out of alignment. I didn’t post a picture of it on TW but I did list it as an issue. Luckily I saw all these issues when I picked it up and had the dealer note them on the sales contract.

That’s really weird my 23 had a slight rough idle for a little while and went away. When you fill up do you stop at first click off or pack the tank?

Not a good idea to "top off" (fill to the vent tubes are full in other words)
Once the pump fuel nozzle auto clicks closed you have filled the tank to capacity with the correct amount of air required to vent freely.
Any more is going to put fuel into the evap system and can cause issues. .................. but... it's your truck have at it.

Yea that’s why I asked the question to Sr5 cause if he is topping off and damaged the charcoal canister it could be the issue with his idle.

Wow I'm in similiar boat but haven't pushed dealer to do anything because the 3 times I've asked to check out it's the same or the one time tech drive with me in passenger his way of driving seemed to act as if covering up symptoms to normal driving but never went far enough to stay at constant speed to feel. Just accelerate fast to high speed and slowdown around the block. The vibration with mine goes along with a whirring sound that when is happening at any speed I can flutter the gas and it's goes exactly with it making me think it could be internal in transmission yet the vibration driving is felt like a gallop shudder with sound going with it and sometimes mostly when accelerate during coast it acts like it's missing beat ever so lightly but can be heard and in tune with the feeling of it in gas pedal. So it ranges from common diagnosis symptoms of unbalanced wheels, wheelbearing yet no sign of that when check , and misfires plug or coils yet no code or tach change , at stop in park or gear getting a massage chair vibe so what's moving mechanically i think pistons firing out of order but engine seems run fine besides shaking and usual sounds but reminds me of a diesel. I think driveshaft when in motion like a u joint but they are unserviceable sealed and don't show obvious free play when checked one had little red rust color around dust cover but no sign of grinding so surface rust I am to believe . Not lifted so no drive shaft angle to cause . Front passenger cv axle has what I Ssume normal play left to right up down no crunch or pop issues driver cv still has needle bearing i have kit for bushing but not lifted at 17000 miles and has hadissues since5k when I got it . The used Toyota Sales manger said why worry drive it until it does show its face and breaks then we'll fix it its under warranty . I have anger problem and have day dreamed of beating these ppl half to death and burning down entire dealer ship. And even findi g engineers cut theme all over and poor lemon juice on them and beat there family and make theme watch for allowing such things to be and do nothing . Mine in financed threw bank I can't just demand to fix and it's my hard earned money and life spent to have to stress over it now multiply that by thousands of tacomas and lives and time and stress . I want to watch theme erd until they comply and make it better . I keep alm though ans the 3rd time I had brought it up and mentioned atlest try tsp buliteen for dampener under cabe to muffle whining of rear diff vibration threw cabe which I had it printed out they had no clue and had to study it and had for 2 days to do once parts came in and it did nothing whatsoever. Told it was aggressive tires I'm hearing so changed tires less aggressive still sound vibration just at a different tune from different r weight of tires in rotation and was totally different seperate sound . . I smile and say ok looking like the fucking joker they think it's a joke. They get paid to tell you bull shit while you pay for the stress . I've contemplated suicide with thus truck being fuel to the depression that creates that thought of action. 800 month payment pit 7k down payment and let theme talk. Me into 4k toyota platinum care plan which is literally nothing nothing at all just talk but it's in with the financing . The anger the want to put cold steel in everyone if those mens mouth and watch theme cry begging no no you say why not do the right thing listen to me and do what it takes to make me fucking happy that my only ride I an enjoy replace it with same with no errors . No no no thats too much for this world now days . Better off without you click li k boom . Fuck yoga especially one I qent to . .maybe others are honest and coukd help but these mofos need to die

I traded mine in, couldn’t stand it anymore and the dealers and corporate did nothing . Feel bad for the next guy who bought it. I bought a 2024 tacoma sr5 and it’s smooth as glass idling and zero vibrations driving

Traded my 2023 in back on June 29th for a 2024 4th gen tacoma. Zero vibrations, and when it idles you can’t even tell the truck is running . Such a vast improvement !

What octane fuel are you using and what rpm does your tach show in drive?
