• Welcome to Tacoma3G.com, a free resource for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma owners!

This website is the passion-project of a USMC veteran/mechanic, @Tyler. I created Tacoma3G.com to share my knowledge of this subject with others and to provide like-minded folks with a comfortable space to ask questions and create 'build threads' within our Tacoma Forums. Now, if the format of this website is confusing to navigate for you, or if you're interested in my full mission and T3G's history, check out the Help and About pages.

    Dual Battery Systems?

Awesome, this is what I was looking at. Will be a while before I take that leap, but might as well start planning early eh.
  6. moostache

    Dual Battery Systems?

Trying to learn a bit more about 12v, is the charging voltage specific to AGM? What about LiPo? I know nothing about dual batteries are cheap, but looking at minimal intrusion into factory parts.

Truck bed organization and fridge/battery/solar set up questions

When not on solar the battery can just run on cig plugs to charge while running. That’s my go to when in transit, then set up solar at camp
  12. moostache

Truck bed organization and fridge/battery/solar set up questions

If you're comfortable terminating wires and cutting the Jackery cables, you can do MC4 connectors on the red and black to retain functionality of the 8mm output. Then you can do an MC4 to SB50 and that should charge the PLB40. Otherwise, I got this cheap panel to test out and I'm still using...

Truck bed organization and fridge/battery/solar set up questions

What’s the output on the Jackery? The PLB40 takes an Anderson SB50 input. I have a 100W all power solar panel that I made a MC4 to SB50 for. Works like a dream.

What have you done to, or with, your Tacoma today?

Looks sharp. Amazing how much space it opens up back there if you don’t need the seats. Was waiting for lumber to go down and found a used full GG setup. Love it, especially with 150lbs of dogs in the back.

Driver's Side Handle (or a lack thereof)

Left hand on the door while I step in. Never really thought about it until I saw this. More of a push than a pull, if that makes sense…

Mr. and Mrs. Nobody's Quicksand DCLB

I have a random question for you while you still have the truck ;) How much space is there between the Drifter and the highest part of the roof? Looking at maybe sticking a full rack underneath the Hab, but I would literally have 1/2" of clearance between the rack and the topper. Looks like...

    iPhone holder advice

You got a budget? Device mounting runs the gamut from dirt cheap to hundreds of $$$ depending on what you want. Best is subjective, but I've been super happy with this: Universal for Phones Device Holder G2. Super solid hold, easy in and out, have it mounted on a dash mount I got from "that...

    Rack suggestions ?

I do definitely like their racks. @Victory4x4 feel like making a Habitat compatible version? :)
  28. moostache

    Rack suggestions ?

Agreed that racks are definitely rated stronger than the roof mounting points themselves. The Hab complicates things with rack sizes and stuff, but because it's accessible from inside, it's a great place to store stuff for me.
  29. moostache

    Rack suggestions ?

    (y) appreciate the follow up, something to think about for sure!
  30. moostache

    Rack suggestions ?

What's the details here? I actually prefer the way the Sherpa mounts in the channels, plus the different sizes available in the Sherpa Animas, but perhaps there's more to it.
  31. moostache

Lightest Storage Bin and Recovery Gear Solutions?

Honestly, you'd be hard pressed to do much better than a plastic bin with a ratchet. Bonus points if you can fit the individual pieces in a tongue box. Don't underestimate the amount of space available behind the rear seats as well.

    Shocks

I don't quite understand this mentality of thinking this is a Toyota problem and that the Taco can't handle a lift. You said it yourself, with "nice looking truck." You got to decide what you want, like why do you need a 6" lift or a lift at all? Plenty of tacos out there on 6" lifts, but in...

    Pre-Purchase Question Fire extinguisher Mount

It works well, but it's cheap, and you get what you pay for. The tolerances weren't that good OOTB, where the pin was really tight. Quick hit with the drill solved that. If I were to do it again, I'd support a small business instead :) This is how I carry it now.
  41. moostache

    Pre-Purchase Question Fire extinguisher Mount

I have something similar to one of these and used t slot nuts to attach directly to the bed rail. Since I put the camper on, I lost my bed rails, so I'm not using it atm, but worked really well when it fit.

Sounds good man, you got me convinced! I always pre download and plan my routes on the iPad too, cause my first choice in sites never works out... Been hitting my usual spots pretty hard during this lockdown, excited to start exploring some new spots and get going again!

lol, my post meant to say haven’t heard good things about performance. Might pick one up since it could serve double duty for work too, and maybe drop the gps puck. Thanks man

    Garmin Overlander Navigation

How are you liking Gaia on the Tab A? Been looking at one to replace an aging iPad mini 2, but I’ve heard good things about gaia performance on Android. That being said, as long as it isn’t crashing on me it’s probably better than this old iPad, and new ones are a pretty penny.

    AT Overland Campers

I don’t have an Atlas, have a Hab instead. But, the profile on the truck is largely the same bar the overhang on the cab. Looks like you have a long bed? If so, it should look similar to mine, but add another 2 ft or so of cabover. Take a look at pics of a Summit, they’re built on the same base.

What do you guys use to organize your tacomas?

It does come from toyotapartsprime, maybe toyotapartschoice or toyotapartsselect might be cheaper. On a more serious note, I agree, some official Toyota stuff is definitely unreasonable and a few maybe worth the extra.
  63. moostache

Help me choose some damn tires

Nice. I run wildpeaks 265/70/17 and the speedo difference is negligible. They look good and have been stuffed pretty well on stock with no rubbing. They’re a great tire for the price. Only had em for about 7k miles so far but no complaints.
  64. moostache

    The 3TPAM

Might be a little late, but I use this with Gaia on an old iPad Mini 2. Picks up a signal super fast, pairs nicely with the iPad. I used to use an old iPhone 5 and would say the Garmin is every bit as accurate if not more in some places. I will say I'm thinking about just getting an iPad with...

Best roof racks and roof top tents?

RCI and Tepui Autana. 2 sizable mutts, so the awning room is perfect for them. Little bit of extra pain to set up and break down, but it's worth to have the pups.

    Suspension Help

None of the options outside of the BDS is going to get you more than 3”. In my opinion, if you’re happy with the performance now, 5100s with the right coils would work great and be way under budget. No crazy rock crawling, you said, but what are your plans? Fire road bombing, poor mans Baja...

Tire size for Icon Stage 2 Lift and 17 x 8.5" Wheels

33s are a crapshoot, specifically 285/75/15 or 70/17. Some say no rub no chop needed others say chop hammer pinch welds, fender trims. If you wanna be absolutely safe with no mods, I’d stay under that.
  75. moostache

    Good price on a Suspension

Those two don’t really go together, unfortunately. In this market you get what you pay for. Billy 5100s have been a budget mainstay for a long time. You can push those fairly hard. What are your plans for your truck? Why do you need a nice suspension and lift? Those are the first questions.

    MTB Riders Thread!

The parts look great for a first bike, and realistically you can grow on a specific frame by upgrading parts. My personal concern for this bike would be the drivetrain, 1x8 only. It may be ok if you're riding majority flat, but you're either giving up top speed or climbing ability. I...

Personally, I'd avoid coil sprung suspension forks. I don't think a decent local bike shop would carry anything that didn't have f/r disk brakes, they don't NEED to be hydraulic. Honeslly, for a beginner bike, stick to the common brands (Trek/Specialized/Giant/Diamondback) and they should...

    MTB Riders Thread!

Heh, just like our trucks, it depends on usage. Anything full sus is going to be a pretty penny ($800 + for a decent one). Bed Stiffeners

I chose @TOTAL CHAOS, cause 1: they’re awesome, and 2: I liked the tie down locations better than the rest. I stand by my opinion that they’re worth it for the tie down points alone. Also their design gets in the way less while sliding things in and out of the bed.
