Transmission Temperature Gauge, ODBII

I am going on a trip shortly and will be towing a trailer.
I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a ODBII transmission temperature gauge.
Also; what is the temperature that I should become concerned at?

Thanks.

I just hooked up a ScanGauge 2 on my 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-Road. You can program it to digitally display transmission fluid temperature and engine oil temperature as well as using the built in engine coolant temperature. I have it displaying the engine RPM and these three parameters.

I'm curious here. You currently do not know what temperature range it would normally run at. Now you're asking what temperature you should worry about. I'm guessing you do not know what the normal operating temperature is.
So, you're going on a trip pulling a trailer. What can you do to mitigate an out of range transmission oil temperature? Will you drop the trailer? Right off hand I'd say as long as you do not pull a trailer that is out of design limitations of the truck, you should be fine.

In a non towing mode my 2018 V6 transmission runs just under 200F once fully warmed up. I understand that anything under 250F is fine for ATF WS. If the temperature goes above 275F then the fluid starts to break down. I would just make sure the fluid is changed regularly when towing. So long as you are under the recommended trailer rating for your model then you should be fine.

HOW HOT IS TOO HOT?

The ideal operating temperature for automatic transmission fluid is between 175 and 225° F. At approximately 240° F, important additives in the ATF begin to cook. The result is the formation of varnish inside the transmission. At approximately 260° F, internal transmission seals (which are typically manufactured from a polyacrylate material) begin to harden. The end results are leaks, both internal and external, simply because the seals lose their elasticity. At approximately 295° F, transmission clutch plates begin to slip because the oil is breaking down further. At approximately 315° F, seals and clutches effectively burn out. Carbon forms in the oil and for all intents and purposes, the transmission is junk. Just for your information, a typical transmission will die within 2000 miles if subjected to 300° F+ heat.
