1️⃣ Getting Started...
We have recently bought a 2017 Tacoma SR for my son. From the day we got it we have experienced a starting issue. This issue is intermittent. Essentially what happens is we turn the key, the lights on the dash come on but nothing happens with the starter, no grinding, no clicking, just silence from the engine, the only thing we hear is the jingling of the keys as we turn them to the start position. We have figured out that if we raise the hood and let it "slam" down it will usually be enough to "engage" whatever isn't connecting and it will turn over and start. Initially the slamming of the hood worked every time the first time, lately it hasn't worked as reliable. We have had to open and close the hood multiple times or even now opening and closing the doors has worked. It seems to be getting worse. I have had it in the dealer and fortunately it happened twice while there, but unfortunately, they can't find anything wrong with it. They have performed all the checks on the battery, starter, ignition, terminals but don't see anything wrong. Have any of you experienced this issue? Does anyone have any ideas?

The DEALER couldn't figure it out? Was it a Toyota dealer? Maybe try a different Toyota dealer. Sounds like a bad connection to the starter but how a dealer couldn't puzzle that out is beyond me. I wonder if you set up a stand alone push button starter if that would bypass the issue. Not sure how possible that is with a modern rig.

Yes it was a Toyota dealer. They checked the starter, ignition switch and the connections. They said it could be a number of things and at this point they would be guessing. Instead of spending a ton of money I thought I would start here and maybe get some ideas on where to start. Thanks

The first thing I would check is your battery connection. Make sure nothing is corroded. Clean everything including the top of your battery. Sometimes the dirt can actually conduct a small amount of electricity and drain off some of the power. Remove each battery connector and use sandpaper on both the battery terminal and the battery connector until they look fresh and clean. Then put everything back together. I had a similar issue years ago on a different car and that solved the issue for me. Hopefully it will help you out.

After you do what Bottman says, the next time it happens, get underneath the truck and tap on the starter solenoid with a hammer and then see if it starts up. If it starts that be the first thing I'd replace.
