I recently bought an older vehicle and I am trying to find a proper workshop repair manual instead of relying on scattered online guides. I want something detailed enough to cover engine timing, electrical diagrams, torque specs, and full disassembly steps rather than a basic owner's handbook.

Has anyone here compared printed manuals versus digital PDF versions from official manufacturers?

I am also curious whether aftermarket publishers like Haynes or Chilton are accurate enough for older models, or if I should track down an original factory manual instead.

What kind of vehicle? In most cases, try and find a online forum that's still active for that chassis. Or find a group on FB (if you use it), sometimes they still have links that work.

I'm a old school 90's honda guy and you can find the FSM online fairly easily.

If you can find one, I’d always recommend the factory service manual (FSM) over Haynes or Chilton. The factory manuals are far more detailed, with complete wiring diagrams, torque specifications, diagnostic procedures, engine timing information, and step by step disassembly/reassembly instructions. Haynes and Chilton are useful for basic maintenance, but they often simplify or omit procedures that the FSM covers in depth.
As for printed vs. PDF, the content is usually identical if the PDF is a legitimate scan of the original manual. A searchable PDF is incredibly convenient in the garage, while a printed manual is nice to have on the bench and doesn’t require a device.
For authenticity, look for original manufacturer publications or reputable reprint companies, and be cautious of generic “download” sites selling low-quality scans. If you mention the exact year, make, and model of your vehicle, people here may be able to point you to the correct factory manual or a trusted source.
