• Welcome to Tacoma3G.com, a free resource for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma owners!

This website is the passion-project of a USMC veteran/mechanic, @Tyler. I created Tacoma3G.com to share my knowledge of this subject with others and to provide like-minded folks with a comfortable space to ask questions and create 'build threads' within our Tacoma Forums. Now, if the format of this website is confusing to navigate for you, or if you're interested in my full mission and T3G's history, check out the Help and About pages.

Where do mice nest in Tacomas ??

Hopefully this is a false alarm. But if it were me, I'd check the cowl, engine air filter, and maybe flip up that plastic engine cover thing and check in the insulation. Next level up I guess would be going through the interior, like undersides of seats. My father had one tunnel into the rear...

2022 Tacoma OR Interior LED Swap

It's possible something shorted in the dome so check that after looking over your fuses. There are PCBs in there that don't take hot-swapping bulbs very well. Some info here. Also, disconnect your battery every time you're doing something that requires unplugging stuff. These trucks are sensitive!

    Location for mounting front camera

Which is where most front cameras get mounted, and it makes sense. My truck didn't come with a front camera in the grill so I decided to get creative with the Anytime Backup kit. Plus, I only feel the need for a rear camera for parking so I mounted the front for sketchy roads. Where did you have...

Finally got a Taco | Camper, Roadtripper

Alright, quick update. 1. Mounted front camera underneath. Seemed like a good use for the extra camera in the Anytime Backup kit. It'll help me not break my truck as fast when I'm out having fun. But durability might be an issue since it's mounted to the rear differential. I had a separate...

T3G Feedback and questions about Tacoma3G.com - How can our community and website be better?

Hey, is the quote tag weirdness in this thread over here user error or website issues? I can't tell and didn't want to derail the thread.
  17. Meclizine

    Location for mounting front camera

Based on my limited testing vibrations haven't been an issue. To be honest I didn't consider the heat from the diff., but it's mounted on an angle bracket off the... thing (locker sensor?) bolted to the passenger side of my housing. I'm hoping that will thermally isolate it enough. I'll find out.
  18. Meclizine

    Location for mounting front camera

Alright, I went and did it. It's on the rear diff. Let's see how it holds up! I routed the wiring along the harness already present (ABS & locker I assume), and then up underneath the rear seats. I cut the green (guide lines) and white (mirror image) wires, for reference. Since I do mostly solo...

    You guys were right!!

I thought those pedal commander things just shift the mapping. That is, the truck thinks I pushed the pedal farther than I really did.

Welp, I got this thing aligned and I'm glad I did. Although I'm not very good at interpreting alignment values, I suspect the toe was causing mild highway squirrelliness. I sprang for the lifetime alignment at Firestone since it seemed like a good deal in my case. How often do the folks who...

I haven't been doing much to my truck this summer. But I changed the cabin filter and engine oil today. Check out the cabin filter after 9k miles: When I fired it up after replacing it I actually thought "what's that smell?" Clean. Clean is what it smells like.

    Help! Zero Cats

From what I can tell it's not legal to remove cats from cars that were made with them. Whether or not you're caught might come down to whether your state has inspections/emission testing. There are mods I'm completely on board with that aren't actually legal, but I'm not seeing much of an...

Wait, how could they fill it above the fill hole? Or was the level higher just from thermal expansion? I feel like I'm missing something. Nice! I'm sure that's a huge relief. I also have good news. I landed a promotion to a permanent position, which is a lot less stressful than being funded by soft money. With that I should be able to change my health insurance to one that will cover a treatment for depression that isn't simply...

    Overhead molle panel storage

Hm. How much weight can that thing take? The one item I have mounted prominently in the back of mine is a fire extinguisher, but that might be too heavy for an overhead panel. Some of the other things I have stashed that might fit on a MOLLE panel: tire plug kit, cargo straps, gloves, and snacks.

    drizzoh's build thread

I'm taking notes. I put some in the back of mine when I took out the rear seats and I've been thinking about doing the doors. But the wheel well? Never would have thought of that. And yeah, the factory deadening is kind of a joke in many areas.

Possible to add OEM premium features?

Honestly, I think the keyless entry is the only one on your list that needs to come from the factory. The others can be aftermarket, and in some cases can be easily better than stock. The inverter in particular is nice to have but is fairly low wattage. I'm not sure of how easily the OEM parts...

New guy, help me spend my money!?!

I've got a long TRDOR even though I'm a single dude with no kids. I wanted all that space for long trips. Long bed to sleep in, roomy backseats for more stuff, like a fridge or a dog when I adopt one. No regrets, except when I ride in my friend's 4runner and watch them choose any parking spot...

    Ask an Entomologist Anything

Yep, that's kind of terrifying. I actually know her and she's not an outlier as far as entomologists go. We're all a little... off, relative to society. That thing is a tarantula hawk, probably from Arizona. Collecting insects in Arizona around the summer monsoons is a bit of an entomology...

DIY Limb Risers AKA Brush Deflectors AKA Bush Wires AKA Bird Rests AKA "What the hell are those things for?"

Here's my best render of what I'm thinking: For me it'd be nice to have cables go all the way to the cap since it's so damn high. Normal length risers would help limbs over the windshield but not over the cap. But I'm worried there might be too much flex in the frame.

DIY Limb Risers AKA Brush Deflectors AKA Bush Wires AKA Bird Rests AKA "What the hell are those things for?"

Don't mind me, just resurrecting the thread... I've been thinking about limb risers for some time now and I love the DIY route. I seem to have an uncommon setup, though. A tall cap on the bed and no roof rack. I'd really like to run them from hood to front cab, then from front cab to front cap...

I tested my fridge/battery/solar combo while camping this weekend. I only did one night because the temps were a bit too low for me and the weather started to get worse on day 2. It's a neat device, but I don't have room for that on my keyring. A multi layered approach is best, too. Turn your keyfob(s) off at night, maybe install a hidden killswitch or two, park inconveniently for being towed, that kind of stuff. Basically, make any other truck easier to steal. Of...

Is this the best tailgate cover?

To be honest it's not a big deal unless you really want a flat panel to work on. It's just that sometimes when I get in my truck after the inner tailgate has been in the sun I can see how warped it is by the shadows alone. But it doesn't damage anything and it'll return to flat when it cools...
  90. Meclizine

Is this the best tailgate cover?

Yeah, aluminum is the best in my opinion. It's tougher and doesn't warp with temperature swings like my DIY HDPE panel.
  91. Meclizine

I do like those cubbies. I'm not sure why they removed the driver side one. Tailgate storage exists already, but I fear for the structural integrity after removing all those braces.
