• Welcome to Tacoma3G.com, a free resource for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma owners!

This website is the passion-project of a USMC veteran/mechanic, @Tyler. I created Tacoma3G.com to share my knowledge of this subject with others and to provide like-minded folks with a comfortable space to ask questions and create 'build threads' within our Tacoma Forums. Now, if the format of this website is confusing to navigate for you, or if you're interested in my full mission and T3G's history, check out the Help and About pages.

How much weight on your tacoma is too much weight for overlanding?

Do you seriously think a few feet above the ground will discourage a bear? They regularly rip open vehicles, RV's and fabric tents won't even slow one down. If your wife hordes candy make her sleep somewhere else.

    Transmission fluid mess

Over filled and puked from dipstick/filler (if you have one). Overheated and one of your seals leaked. Leaky seal on the verge of letting go entirely. You need to get it up on a rack and find the source. If you aren't comfortable with trannys take it to a tranny shop, not the dealer unless...

Brand new 2023 - cab misaligned to bed

Seems to be a lot more common, like everyone I've seen on Mexico trucks. Not surprising. Toyota's build quality has been suffering more and more over the last few years.

How much weight on your tacoma is too much weight for overlanding?

I just figured it out. I know why I'm so anti roof top tent. As a kid we had bunk beds. I had the top and more than once I rolled out. Must have caused an unnamed phobia.

How much weight on your tacoma is too much weight for overlanding?

What I can't figure out is why all these kids are so afraid of sleeping on the ground. Well maybe I do have an idea. Next time you're in the mens room listen to how many fathers tell their kids "don't touch that". I thing germaphobia has taken over two entire generations. The thought of...

what is gen 3 Tacoma exhaust made out of?

Try attaching a magnet to it. That will tell you whether it is ferrous metal or not. If it's not, it might be stainless. Which has a higher scrap value than ferrous metal And, do you really think a scrap yard is going to be the best one to give you an honest answer?

Desk to Glory, Tundra House on Wheels

Nothing new. In the 80's a couple built a truck and camper and and drove down to the tip of South America. I believe they called their series of article "The Turtly Expeditions". Compared to what they did remember, this was 50 years ago, wandering around Europe and North Africa today pale by...

Is this the dreaded axle leak?

As mentioned, check the vent. Also, throughly clean the axel and see if it comes back. It could have come off the road or something you hit.

    First Taco!

Comsidering the name no one should be surprised that the new Maverick has issues. I once had to decide between a 1972 Gran Torino and a 1972 Maverick. Gran Torino won hands down on looks and performance. Turned out on reliability and longevity as well.

    Engine Pinging

Ah, but if octane were the whole story. While octane can be related to pre-ignition issues, what's important about an energy source is the amount of energy per volume. In liquid fuels it's measred in BTU's (British Thermal Units). Ethanol is rated at about 76,000 btu's. E85 is rated at...

    Engine Pinging

Yea, when I was a kid I used to tank blend racing fuel from SoCal Racing Fuels with premium in the mistaken thought it would make my Chevy Nova turn better times at Brotherhood. Funny thing is when I got a degree in chemistry and started making gas for a living I found out I was only deluding...

    Engine Pinging

Ethanol laced fuels look really good at first. They are insidious and create problems later. Ethanol was another of the govenrnment (read politicians who have no scientific or mechanical knowledge) requirements. It's purpose wasn't the extension of fuel supplies and less expensive fuel (I've...

    Engine Pinging

Before buying into the "Top Tier" BS, I made gasoline for over twenty years, do yourself a favor and buy some fuel system cleaner and run a bottle of that through. Regardless of the "Tier" of gasoline (they all pretty much meet minimum government standards) when you run it throguh if you don't...

    ALSD in 4wd on Sport

Any form of electronic traction control is just a feel good device for those that don't understand how a vehicle operates. Take a look at some of the Youtube videos of off road recoveries. Quite often they are 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive with electronc hubs, and traction control...
