I wouldn't use them as a tie down. I don't have anything heavy on them but it's made to have a hi-lift jack mounted to it. I figure if they can handle that weight anything else should be fine.
Maybe look into molle panel systems for the bed. I have them on both sides of the bed. Hatchet and splitting axe mounted on one side, sholve on the other with plenty of room to add a med kit.
Most people don't have hatchets and axes and have their straps, shackles etc. mounted on the system...
After watching some one scrub off 1/4 inch of dirt and rock off his truck (no water just straight to the brush) then his little boy using the brush to clean the bay floor I've never used those on paint. Wheels, tires, bed, tent cover and cab rack get the brush.
