2017 TRD OR MT with about 61K miles and the clutch has started slipping. No smells and it's only in 3rd+ so far. I have not been especially hard on the truck, only 10% of the time off-road or towing tops so I'm pretty disappointing it's already worn out. What should I expect to spend to get it replaced? I'd do it myself but I don't have the tools or time. Also, dealership VS independent shops thoughts?

61K is REALLY early for it to go.
I have heard of them going from a lot of low-speed pedal use going over obstacles like rocks and such.
Even from using it in other areas like sand and slow trails with a lot of pedal riding time "using the clutch"
Is this the case?

Pushing the pedal all the way down - shifting and quickly / fully releasing (normal shifting) should not lead to failure.
But carrying a lot of weight and working the clutch A LOT will cause faster wear and get it hot.

Heat causes glazing and it will have symptoms of a slip just like wear will.
Grease and oil can also cause it to slip. Have you looked for an oil leak?

I have seen these trucks go 300K on a normally used and operated OEM clutch.
Even 100K is super early,..................... unless it was pedal ridden and was glazed or worn from a lot of pedal slow-release also. known as riding of the clutch

But my opinion would be to get someone that has done Tacoma clutches before, most likely a dealer.
Two reasons,... EXPERIANCE and WARRANTY.

FYI - the clutch pressure plate could also be part of the problem; this is usually caused by holding the clutch down a lot.
Like sitting at red lights or waiting in line at a drive thru.
-
If relacing one part,... replace ALL
clutch - pressure plates - throw out bearing and fork - resurface or replace the flywheel also.

61K ???? This is too early IMO,... something is wrong, or it had a hard life.

Yup, thanks for that because this is all lining up with my same thinking. I'll make an appointment at the dealership today.

Whelp, dealership confirmed the clutch is fucked. $3100 to replace it, resurface the flywheel and replace the main seal.

Whelp, dealership confirmed the clutch is fucked. $3100 to replace it, resurface the flywheel and replace the main seal.
Was the rear seal leaking and caused the clutch to slip?
Or did the clutch give up and they are changing the seal for precaution?

OR are the clutch bad and the seal is going bad,.................. details man,, details.

Haven't got the full details yet. I think it's the second one though. They are still working on it. Should get it back tomorrow, probably.
In case they forget to tell you,... Break in,.... its a lot like a new car.
I would take it easy for at least a tank of gas or no more than 500 miles.
  • Drive gently. Avoid hard launches, rapid acceleration, and downshifting to slow the truck.
  • Shift smoothly. Engage each gear gently, ensuring complete disengagement before shifting to the next gear.
  • Keep RPMs low. Shift below the halfway mark on the tachometer during the break-in period.
  • Avoid aggressive driving. Refrain from racing, towing, or off-roading during the break-in process.
