I was able to take my truck up to Lolo Pass Rd on Mt Hood. We stopped at a trailhead to have some fun.

I’m new to the truck and off roaring in general and am embarrassed to admit I got a bit stuck in what looks like an easy place. The first time I got stuck I went into deeper snow to go around a car that got stuck. The second time I got stuck I was trying to turn around.

I tried 4H, locking the diff, and ended up digging myself out and putting on chains. I didn’t think of using 4L until someone mentioned it on Tacoma World.

Here are some photos of the trip and a link to a video.

I know I want some better tires for next time but might want to go out with some more experienced guys so I can learn some more.

Nice! I haven't dared take mine to snow since I have the stock ATs and they're not looking too good right now. I see that you have the OR, did you try to lock the rear in 4L? I don't think it'll let you lock while in high. I hear using S mode to hold gears prevents the truck from up shifting so much which can break traction. Throw MTS into the mix in 4L and you should get Auto LSD. Based on what I've read, anyway. I haven't tried MTS yet I'm a little ashamed to say. Nice pictures and good on you for going out and learning!

Good learning experience, but your inexperience and lousy tires came into play. 4low and definitely Crawl control would have walked you right out of that.

Keep on trucking!

Hey, if you never push your limits, you'll never learn.

I would recommend two things:
1) get a set of MaxTrax ASAP.
2) Invest in a winch.

Then you can push the limits (reasonably) and get out of trouble (usually).

One word…traction boards! Well okay that’s two words but they work.
Took the wife and granddaughter up to Frog Lake Wednesday to play in the snow. Didn’t drive into any deep snow but my original Goodyear Wrangler tires with 32k miles on them did great on the snow.

Frog lake is where my son wanted to be I but the traffic to get up there was aweful so I turned down Lolo!

It was really interesting to see the lake covered in snow compared to summer.

Are those the stock tires? Those things failed me in mud, snow and sand before I tossed them. Honestly, good tires are more important that traction boards, winches, crawl control or 4lo. I have Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws and I bomb all over Oregon in them and aside from making sure I air them down I havn't really needed anything else since I got them.

Excellent advice, I do plan on getting new tires but I’ll keep these till it’s time to replace them.

I’m still running the stock Goodyear Wrangler tires, (only at 32k miles) but I’ve decided to get the Falken’s next time.

You guys would laugh at my old steel traction boards. Picked them off the curb that someone was throwing away.

Must take a pic some day.

OH! Steel traction boards are legit! Don't they call those sand ladders though?
