• Welcome to Tacoma3G.com, a free resource for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma owners!

This website is the passion-project of a USMC veteran/mechanic, @Tyler. I created Tacoma3G.com to share my knowledge of this subject with others and to provide like-minded folks with a comfortable space to ask questions and create 'build threads' within our Tacoma Forums. Now, if the format of this website is confusing to navigate for you, or if you're interested in my full mission and T3G's history, check out the Help and About pages.

Hey, all. Arron here. I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest I've been a lifelong VW/Euro car elitist, but finally decided there were a few things in life that I couldn't reasonably accomplish in a VW or Audi. After 15 or 16 VW/Audi vehicles, it was time to buy the only model of pickup I've ever respected besides the VW Caddy (I actually own an '81 gasser with a 1.8L Cabby engine!)

I'm going to use this thread to document my progress, and to save videos and information I gather for my build. I may post a link or video here and there to reference later. If that helps someone else out... that's awesome. If you think I'm doing something the hard way, say something. Forums are great places to learn and find some community.

A co-worker and I were driving around, and stopped by the local stealership to see what they had on the lot. I wanted a couple very specific things. It had to be a double cab, long bed (you know, a truck), TRD Off-road package, and I was fairly sure I wanted the tech package. I knew I didn't want to deal with all o fthe extra 2018 radar sensors, so there was only a single option. This truck. I would have preferred a quicksand or grey Tacoma, but white was more than acceptable. Ultimately, the package was more important than the color.

A couple days later, I started stripping the trade in of several years worth or work. I loved my Audi A3 S-line, but all good things come to an end I suppose.

Didn't get any fancy pictures with my salesman, but I did walk away with the truck for just a hair over $36k. Sticker price was north of $41k. Went straight to work after the purchase, then drove down to a buddy's house to swap my silver grill for his recently plasti-dipped grill (I don't really consider this a mod...just like it better than fake chrome).

The dealership was hasseling me for a perfect survey, so my wife told them we would trade for a full set of weathertech floor mats. She's a badass. Picked up a bitchin AJT Design keyfob, too.

Next, I picked up a 32" CALIRAISED LED bar from my buddy (Quicksand Taco pictured above) and installed it.

Got the Dash pieces cerakoted to match the truck, and blacked out all the vent rings while I was at it. Obigatory Tacos in a taco, too :)

I decided it was time to step things up, and get going towards my real goals with this truck. RCI bed rack, and CVT Mt Shasta extended tent.

Lighting upgrades came next, with LED bulbs for the headlights (I know this is a major eyeroll to some people), and CALIRAISED LED fog pods.

Thanks to @Maxx.Powell , I was turned on to the stupid cheap MBRP cat-back exhaust. The first couple hundred miles were acceptable, but now (1k later) it sounds perfect. No regrets at all. Got the stock tip on, too!

And that brings us to today (5/16/18). I've got a couple big orders inbound, so I should have some awesome updates here soon ?

Oh boy, it's been an expensive and extremely frustrating week.

Started off by ordering a complete lift kit, only to be told hours later that their credit card company declined the sale because my address "doesn't exist," even though my credit card company approved the transaction. Shipping and billing are identical. Wow... I've lived here for 9 years, and never had a problem. Now it'll take up to 30 days for the money to be reconciled and available to me. awesome. I'll need the suspension on before I can even think about putting on the next thing.

SO then I order some wheels, and had some kind of weird issue where I got a confirmation, but the company called me back saying it hadn't been completed. Okay... confirmed with my credit card company, and started over. Was able to get an additional 10% off by phoning the order in. Great. The guy tells me the order will ship THAT DAY, and he confirmed stock on hand. About an hour later I get the confirmation email saying shipping no later than 5/18. Okay.. whatever. no biggie. Today I get an email saying "shipping revised to no later than 5/25." What the? I call the idiots and explain everything, and get the feeling it's a drop ship company that doesn't actually hold stock. No I'm promised that they're shipping 5/21...but MAYBE 5/22." FML

In the middle of all the wheel mess, I ordered an expensive electrical system product, found out it was a knock-off, and canceled my order. Took 3 days to get the money back. Ordered the original/correct version of the product and got a tracking number in under 30 minutes. At least that one went somewhat smoothly.

TL;DR - First world problems. Mo' money, mo' problems

No I need some tire money. haha

I've also got a Front facing camera and anytime switch for the OEM rear camera coming from TRDmod.com. pretty excited for that. Definitely stole that idea from @Maxx.Powell :ROFLMAO:

Dang, that's a lot of headache all at once. With that mod, will it still automatically give you the rear camera in reverse? Or do you now need to manually switch it on when you use reverse?

My understanding is it works like stock unless the switch is activated.

Nice recap and start to your build! Sorry about all the CC hiccups. Maybe it’s a sign to slow down the mods. Lol

Maybe.... but the suspension was the first thing I tried to buy! lol

In related news, I've got a SwitchPros 9100 being delivered today, and I got my anytime front/rear camera setup in yesterday. The instructions that came with the camera are a little above my head, so I'm going to do some research on things before touching anything. The SwitchPros should actually make it easier.

I'd like to see a write up with the front camera set up when you're finished! I'm probably going to try to do something like that here soon if it doesn't seem too involved

Checkout @Maxx.Powell youtubes channel, he recently did this mod.

Got my Switch Pros 9100 in last night. Realized I wanted a 30A terminal block to clean up the wiring, so I got that ordered via amazon. The setup on this thing looks super simple, so I anticipate knocking it out over the Memorial Day weekend. I was especially excited that there are two separate camera stickers included with the kit. The pictures I looked at before ordering had me thinking I was going to end up using AUX1 & AUX 2 for the front/rear anytime cameras, but now I won't have to. Eventually I will relocate the switch pros, and use OEM style switches for the cameras, but that won't come until I max out the SP unit.

Also received tracking info the wheels I ordered. Turns out the company is ordered through is a drop ship company, which entirely explains all the hassle I've had with their "shipping dept." Autoanything.com has great prices, even better if you PM thier guy ECCRACER104 on TacomaWorld, but I wish they would have said upfront they do drop shipping. I asked two different people, and and never got a straight answer. I wouldn't have batted an eye at the shipping fiasco had I known this in the beginning. Oh well, not like I have tires yet anyways.

Got my Switch Pros 9100 wired up, yesterday. Wasn't to difficult. Hardest part was finding the right fuses to tap into. I initially used an example from my local buddy (TAF_Taco on IG), but it wasn't allowing the truck to start. Then I found another setup on TacomaWorld that worked perfectly. Eventually I will move the control panel to above the center console, above the sunroof controls, but this was an easy placement for the time being. I already miss having the little cubby. This weekend I will start rewiring my light bar to the Switch Pros, install the anytime front/rear camera wiring, and hopefully install my bed rail LEDs. For now, it's just a blank canvas.

The actual wiring install turned out pretty good, in my book. I don't have much in the way of experience in this stuff, but I was able to get it pretty "clean" I think. I'd dtill like to hide the trigger and ignition wires a little better. I was able to mount the SP power block to the side of the engine bay by drilling two holes in the wall and bolting it there. I'd have preferred a fancy mounting plate, but this works just fine.

Spent some time cleaning up the switch pros wiring, and adding my already installed accessories to it. Also got my bed LED strips mounted and wired up. The picture is horrible, but the result is perfect. This will be great for camping, in the event I get a late start on setup.

Finally got The Anytime rear + front camera from @trdmod installed. After watching @maxx.powell’s install video, and reading the instructions, I felt I was ready to tackle the project. Well, I’m not an electrician or skilled A/V guy. Ended up blowing my ECU No.2 fuse, and losing my TPMS & Auto headlight features. After more than generous help from @trdmod in the middle of the night, I got it sorted out and everything is working perfectly. Seriously, I’ve read how helpful JJ is, and none of what’s been said does the man justice. He’s awesome.

Now to figure what to add to the switch pros blank spots...

Check out the kit at www.trdmod.com

Added a 3D printed phone mount from BerryItDesigns on Etsy. Much nicer than the vent mounted WIZgear I had before. That thing constantly spun around and caused my phone to end up on the floorboard. Now my phone stays flat, and stays on the dash.

BP-51 kit showed up. Came with a free pair of SPC upper control arms, two branded camping chairs, and a “drinking cup”. Can’t wait to get this stuff swapped onto the Taco.302EC7CE-0833-483B-B61F-52DD84038DC4.jpegD164D1A5-8D94-47E4-97D9-42DCD38E60CF.jpeg
Hella stoked for you! I got an email about that promo OK4WD was offering, tough to walk away from.

Decided to install the SPC upper control arms, BP-51 kit this last weekend. Absolutely love the way it all turned out. The lift is perfect for my wants/needs, and the ride is overall improved. The install took me from about 5:30am until around 9pm. I definitely took my time doing it, but it was a full day's work for one person. I used the videos posted earlier in this thread as a reference, and figured the rest out on my own. Ordered a set of Nitto Ridge Grapplers (285/70/17) C rated tires this morning, and should have them and the new wheels on by Monday morning.

For the SPC upper control arms, I used this video as a reference:

Here's the before (bottom) and after (top). I didn't get a before measurement (DOH!) but did snag the after specs. Front. is 38.25" and the rear is 39". Those numbers are from the ground and directly across the center of the wheel, to the bottom edge of the fender flare.

Also got a new pair of sliders installed. My previous set were mistakingly made for a short bed. Matt @ FullForceMetalworks brought them up from Vancouver and swapped everything.

I'll third the request for the write-up on the front camera mod!

Also, I checked out trdmod.com and I don't see any kits for sale... Just tumblers and switch plates lol.

I second that motion!

Best I can do is link you guy's the video. I didn't take any photos during the install, and just followed @Maxx.Powell 's steps. The only difference was that I linked the camera switches to my Switch Pros, which isn't covered by the video.

TRDmod.com may not have any of them because he's been working on adding support for a 3rd and 4th camera.

Thanks! That helps.

This is a seriously awesome mod - I find myself unable to see what's right in front of me on the trail all the time!

I did it specifically for the trail use aspect, but have already used it a bunch for just normal everyday situations. I like to pull straight through parking spots, and it's nice to activate the rear camera to see when my rear bumber has cleared the line. I come from VW/Audi hatchbacks, so this DCLB is kicking my ass :ROFLMAO:
