• Welcome to Tacoma3G.com, a free resource for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma owners!

This website is the passion-project of a USMC veteran/mechanic, @Tyler. I created Tacoma3G.com to share my knowledge of this subject with others and to provide like-minded folks with a comfortable space to ask questions and create 'build threads' within our Tacoma Forums. Now, if the format of this website is confusing to navigate for you, or if you're interested in my full mission and T3G's history, check out the Help and About pages.

Tyler's #VanLife on 37s Four Wheel Camper Build & Tacoma3G.com Shenanigans

Is it bad that I kinda wish I had this:

Right up until the tranny craps out. Then you'll be wanting your Taco back.
Or until the back window leaks. I've had 2 friends buy Ram's, both had to give them back because Dodge put in 4 rear windows and they still leaked. I do feel like the ECO Diesel would be a great option, wonder if Toyota will ever release a small displacement diesel like they did in the Hilux.

It would be so upsetting if that happened to your new truck that you were probably so excited for when you bought it. Dang.

I'd be upset as well, but 3G's are common for the 3rd brake light leaking. Although didn't Toyota issue a TSB for this? I haven't experienced the 3rd brake light leak thankfully.

Not sure if they did or not. I didn’t even know about that when I got mine in 2017.

It's a truck I'd like to have. No shame in that at all. The Prospector XL is awesome. 40 inch tires fit with only a 3 inch lift, a fancy axle relocation, and some beautiful trimming and fenders.

$110K when I last looked at them seemed a bit much for a big truck, though with current prices it looks a little better.

Pretty much this. AEV trucks are special because they are basically factory mods. But I don’t think I’d ever buy one because of the price and kinda sorta cause I’d miss out on the DIY build journey.

But I would definitely use some of the AEV stuff on a personal build. I mean, the one I posted the picture of (which started as a barebones work truck and was dropped off at AEV to be outfitted), is 👌

Today we’re working on our rear seat delete and sound deadening. I’ll have pictures later.

In the meantime, here’s some [presumably] useless data about the various heights of my truck. Someone on IG needed the numbers.

I could almost stand up in that camper, good pic for reference!

I was really eyeballing the 4 wheel camper for a while. I just didn't like the idea that I couldn't take it on and off like I could a Kimbo. But then my lady talked me into a camping trailer.. So.. We met half way and got a semi-offroad camping trailer. I'm bummed I probably can't take it as far as a setup like yours but it'll still get deeper than a lot of regular camper trailers, at least.

All about that off-grid life.

We weighed our options like that when we were buying. It came down to:

— Knowing we didn’t want a hard sided one that is always popped up

— Knowing we want one that pops up fully instead of the ones that only pop up on one side (like a triangle)

— Ruling out a trailer because of 1) off roading and 2) hardee

Right, I didnt like the huge bubble on top of my truck either. It really seemed like the 4WC had it all but.. Too late now! I'll have to live vicariously through you.

Can't you? GrizzlyNbear Overland has something similar (I thought) and then take it out and put it in all the time.

Huh, well! I didn't know. It's not something I see advertised and I thought general consensus was that it wasn't "safe" to operate a camper shell when not in the back of the truck. Then again, I guess that's how they show them off at the dealers. Usually I see wood underneath 'em, though.

I don’t know why my thing about not wanting a trailer says “hardee”. My iPhone did that?

But what I actually wrote was that we also didn’t want a trailer because it would be harder to park when we are in little towns/villages/cities.

Nice! That provides a lot more space than I expected!
Especially because we have two paddle boards that we weren’t sure where to put. They fit really nicely when vertically strapped to either cab corner (by the seatbelts). It made these bulky items almost disappear inside my truck/camper storage situation.

Do you recall which notch this was? Did you ever run into the needle bearing issue? I can't remember if I read you did or not.
The notch was the second from highest (I forget the number). I never ran into the needle bearing issue which kind of surprised me.

🧐 Opinions needed! 🤔 — If you were living on the road full time, would you mount your bikes like this, or would you not bring the bikes and miss out on some killer rides?

Before forming your opinion, consider these pros and cons:

[PROS]
• Biking is a lifelong passion of ours so being able to ride anywhere in North America is the ultimate experience
• Casual riding would be a good way to quickly inspect a new area before committing to camping, hiking, etc. in that area
• Having the bikes adds a great option for daily exercises

[CONS]
• Theft. I don’t think it can be prevented so it’s a risk you’d need to accept.
• Damage from other vehicles. I imagine a car bumping into them in a parking lot is inevitable.
• Mother Nature. She’s going to leave her mark on the bikes, but does it matter?
• Added weight on the swing out tire carrier

If you’re still reading, I respectfully request your wisdom on this frivolous subject! 🚲

How expensive are your bikes?
Having lost $3000 worth of bikes to theft in a quiet neighborhood during a two week long crime spree in said neighborhood, I feel ya. But if I were you, I'd definitely bring them.
And from a trauma surgeon: wear your helmet.

They’re worth about $450 each, so wouldn’t be the biggest loss in that regard. Their real value (to me) is how rare they are as a side effect of Covid. These are 2021 colors for these bikes which were hardly produced due to material shortages. So this model bike in our specific colors only exist in a handful, lol!

Definitely invest in a high-rated lock system. That's about all I can say
