• Welcome to Tacoma3G.com, a free resource for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma owners!

This website is the passion-project of a USMC veteran/mechanic, @Tyler. I created Tacoma3G.com to share my knowledge of this subject with others and to provide like-minded folks with a comfortable space to ask questions and create 'build threads' within our Tacoma Forums. Now, if the format of this website is confusing to navigate for you, or if you're interested in my full mission and T3G's history, check out the Help and About pages.

Mr. and Mrs. Nobody's Quicksand DCLB

Exactly. We've been debating this for almost a year so it's pretty rad that it's finally here.

Updated the thread because man have we changed a lot recently. ??

Installed one of my Plano cases on the rack in front of the Drifter. I originally had them set up to run lengthwise along the truck. Once the Drifter was installed I had to remove one and mount a single one across the truck. I didn't have to drill more holes as I was able to just move one of the bars.

My wife also installed a couple of interior pull straps to make closing the windoors from the inside a bit easier.

Last I wired up my @Baja Designs RTL (rear tail light) and mounted it inside the drifter under the glass.

Plenty more to do. Hopefully I can stay productive as I have the next couple of days off.

The horizontal box on the roof rack is perfect. That's exactly what I'm going to do with mine.

It worked out quite well. I was hoping I wouldn't have to redrill new holes and that it would fit well with the height of the Drifter. I'll be repurposing the other box for some other toys and we reorganized our kit to fit despite being down one box.

Nice! The RTL looks really good with that set up!

Got out to Ocotillo Saturday night. Started at our usual spot. No crazy exploring, just used it as a trip to test out our new camp loadout and to get away from the city for a night.

Really curious on how it feels on trail vs cap with rtt too heavy wise if the weight distribution makes it feel better on off camber obstacles. Eventually I’d love to ditch the cap rtt for something more streamline and lower center of gravity but wondering if these camper shells are that much different or not

I think his is probably better than your setup. I’m not sure how mine will be.

Honestly the truck feels pretty similar to when we had the shell and RTT. The old setup was definitely pretty heavy as the fiberglass is heavy and the tent is too. This new setup doesn't feel any worse, not sure of it's better yet either as we haven't done major off camber. So far it feels stable though.

Okay if it felt way better I’d be selling the cap and rtt in a heartbeat to fund one but I guess it’ll stay as a down the line purchase

I will add, we also now have front and rear bumpers. So the "doesn't feel much different" is including having added bumpers to the truck.

I'm not worried about weight per say I'm already fucked, more on if it feels less top heavy on off camber situations on trails

That’s why I would think the camper would help because it puts most of your weight in the bed. Granted, the bed and the top of the camper are still up there, so it still wouldn’t be as good as nothing at all. But I have seen videos of people wheeling the different camper variations.

I hear ya @Nick BBP . So far it felt very stable off-road. The rtt may have even felt a bit more top heavy. I'll definitely be testing it more in the future, for now I'm still trying to get it dialed in before longer road trips.

The wife picked up a few small details and through them in today.

Replaced the zipper pulls with something a bit more quiet.

And added some levels.

I've been spending my free time looking into brake upgrades. The factory stuff is getting to it's limit if not beyond it. Measured the wheels for a Wilwood kit today.

The wife did a little project yesterday and we reinstalled it today. This is the underside of half the bed platform in the Drifter for those wondering.

How it starts off...

Some nice felt style lining and quality sticky tape...

Then she reorganized our patch collection. National Parks, State Parks, truck related companies and brands, fire department stuff, and breweries we love.

And what it looks like when you look up in the camper once reinstalled...

Fixed a few small things yesterday on the truck. Then went and started scoping out cushion options for the Drifter. We're planning to make a L couch in the bed.

Also my wife finished editing some night photos I took on a trip a few weeks back. She's way better at editing than I am.
