• Welcome to Tacoma3G.com, a free resource for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma owners!

This website is the passion-project of a USMC veteran/mechanic, @Tyler. I created Tacoma3G.com to share my knowledge of this subject with others and to provide like-minded folks with a comfortable space to ask questions and create 'build threads' within our Tacoma Forums. Now, if the format of this website is confusing to navigate for you, or if you're interested in my full mission and T3G's history, check out the Help and About pages.

What exhaust do you guys have installed? If any?

Exhaust is such a subjective topic. I had the MBRP high clearance version on my old rig and it droned so badly on the highway that we let it go with the truck when we traded it in rather than swapping it over. For the new truck, I just did high clearance mods to the stock exhaust and the whole family is much happier. I prefer having more intake noise than exhaust noise on a V6 anyways, and that's exactly what I have now with the OEM muffler and an Airaid intake. It's quiet cruising and has just enough growl to not sound like you're driving a Camry until you get higher in the RPM range.

That being said, I think the best sounding and most balanced exhaust for these trucks is actually the TRD one, and it's the only TRD accessory I actually think is worth a shit. I wish I could buy just the muffler, but they only sell it as a complete system and I don't want to pay for the whole thing just to turn around and cut it up.

Just curious is that intake carb legal?
I’m in California and I want to get a intake soon

I have a Borla 40665 Muffler and I dumped the tip over the rear axle. It seems like this is pretty similar to the muffler on the TRD Exhaust. The sound is really mild driving around town, but when passing or grinding up a hill at about 2,800 RPM its definitely there. That being said it is much quiter than the MBRP systems I've heard.

Yea I’ve heard the same exact opinions on the borla as well but overall there both awesome exhaust for these trucks just depends if you want a more tame one or a more out of control exhaust lol

I had a pipe shop do a high clearance re-route and weld in a y pipe for an electric cutout. It's stupid loud then stock quiet at the press of a button. it rulz!!

How much was that if you don’t mind me asking?
I believe the valve and y pipe was around $230 for parts. I dont remeber exactly what the shop charged me but it was around $150 for the re-eoute. I did the wiring.

It’s definitely got more power and fuel efficiency vs stock

But it's dumping right after the axle because it wouldn't fit around my 35" tires under the bed. Sounds pretty good, doesn't drone, maybe a touch too loud for my preferences, but it is echoing under the truck. It was quieter when it exited out the back, but was into the tire quite a bit.

I noticed zero differences in fuel economy or power (y)
Interesting. I’ve been wondering if the stock exhaust would get much louder when I cut it at the axle during my high cleareance bumper install. I would prefer it to not be too loud.

It's not loud stock at all. I just did that for more clearance of the spare when I get one.
